Martin Lewis has asked the public for simple, inexpensive and broadly uncontroversial changes that could make Britain work a little better.
What better place to start than with putting an end to street scars?
We can hold utility companies to account for scarring our streets with just a few changes to legislation that will:
🚧Make them put pavements back exactly as they found them and increase the fines for failing to do so.
🚧Require them to pay the full cost of restoring damaged pavements to the original standard.

Please submit your small ideas for fixing Britain to the Small-Ideas.org website. It’s a new charitable initiative I’ve set up to try and make sure life’s potholes don’t get ignored. Working with two charities and a cross party panel to turn your ideas into policy then try and make it happen. Please share.

Why is the term ‘Commit Su*cide’ not really appropriate?
Please do tell me how you feel about it, whatever your perspective. It’s a difficult #mentalhealth related topic, but it’s something we need to talk about.

Hi @OctopusEnergy last night my car charged for three hours yet your charge cap reckons it was seven! It seems to be counting every hour as two! That can't be right. – at Beeston, England

Andy Burnham says because of the risk of wildfires, during the current hot spell, he is asking shops to not sell magnifying glasses to children who may try to burn ants.

Surely an emergency alert has to be an actual emergency not just "don't be an idiot"

Incidentally, if there IS a wildfire near me, are we allowed to break the hosepipe ban..? 🤔
Adam Robbins retweeted
To send out an #emergencyalert for potential wildfires is utterly stupid - it will desensitise people to such alerts. The phone alerts should only be used for imminent or current terrorist attacks or major incidents.

Next emergency alert should warn people not to make toast in the bath. Lives are a stake.

When the Severe Alert system was established in 2024 it was made clear that:
“There will be a very high threshold for its use based on strict criteria centred on an immediate risk to life.”
Tonight’s use at a national level clearly doesn’t hit that threshold and opens the door to future misuse of the system.
Labour needs to publish who signed off the decision to use the alert and the criteria that they were using.

If you want people to start ignoring national alerts, that's exactly the kind of message you use them for!
We don't need a national alert system to tell everyone in the country not to use BBQs!
Absurd!

Seems quite a misuse of the emergency alert tbh. I thought they were supposed to be for imminent danger like incoming missiles, tsunamis, etc. Misusing it will cause people to switch them off. Dangerous!
Adam Robbins retweeted
that is a really disgraceful abuse of the system. Save it for major national disasters not nannying

I think the use of this today degrades the value of having the Emergency Alert. In my view, this should be reserved for immediate and necessary action not information - however important. And the wildfires are important. But there are other better ways to educate than a message people are desperate to get rid of through the noise.
