Working medical devices are essential to #NewbornCare. A peer-reviewed #NEST360 study across Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria & Tanzania found median biomedical workshop readiness rose from 28% to 50%. But spare parts & after-hours staffing remain major gaps.

Stanford researchers scanned teenagers listening to their mothers, having already shown that in young children her voice lights up half the brain. Something had switched.
In children under about twelve, the reward circuitry fires harder for their mother's voice than for a stranger's. In adolescents it flips. The reward regions respond more strongly to unfamiliar voices, and her voice stops being the sound the system reaches for.
The crossover happens somewhere between thirteen and fourteen. Nothing has gone wrong. The circuitry has not broken and she has not been demoted. It is being retuned deliberately, because a person who is going to leave home needs to start finding other people interesting, and the brain arranges that by making everyone outside the house more rewarding to listen to.
Which means the thing every mother of a teenager describes has a mechanism. He is not ignoring her out of contempt. Her voice is no longer arriving at the part of him that used to light up for it.
Two things worth holding onto here. The first is that the hearing and processing regions are still there and still working. He hears her perfectly. What changed is what his reward system does with the sound.
The second is that this is temporary, and there is a whole literature on adult children and their mothers to say so. The circuitry is being repointed outward for the years he needs to build a life away from her. It is not being deleted.
So a woman finds herself talking to somebody who used to run toward her voice across a car park, and who now barely registers it. That is her son's brain doing exactly what it is supposed to do, on schedule, and it is a horrible thing to be on the receiving end of.

How do you decide exactly where the treatment threshold should be?
Dr. Alex Kemper — lead author of the 2022 AAP Hyperbilirubinemia Guidelines — explains why determining phototherapy thresholds took years of debate, evidence review, and committee discussion.
With babies of different gestational ages, varying risk factors, and complex neurotoxicity considerations, there’s no single formula that solves it. Guideline writing meant balancing imperfect data, diverse perspectives, and the goal of protecting infants while avoiding unnecessary treatment.

Today at @LUTHofficial, we celebrated #WorldPrematurityDay with two sets of thriving 4-year-old quadruplets born here using #NEST360 equipment, & two sets of preterm babies currently in care. 💜
Every baby, no matter how small, deserves a fighting chance. #WPD2025 #NewbornCare

ALT Today, we joined the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) community to celebrate World Prematurity Day 2025, the LUTH way. 💜 It was a truly special moment standing alongside Prof. Chinyere Ezeaka, the MD of LUTH and NEST360 Nigeria Country Lead, and a dedicated team of doctors and nurses, as we celebrated two sets of thriving 4-year-old quadruplets born in this facility using NEST-supported equipment, and two sets of preterm babies currently receiving care. Today was a powerful reminder of what quality newborn care, teamwork, and unwavering commitment can achieve, giving every baby, no matter how small, a fighting chance.

Our co-founder @asaarinen was the leading advocate in getting #CCHD screening added to the RUSP in the U.S. An amazing legacy that has saved thousands of lives in the years since her baby daughter’s diagnosis with asymptomatic heart defects. 🫀
Pulse oximetry screening for critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) in newborns has decreased early infant deaths by 33%—a landmark improvement in newborn care. This simple, painless test helps neonatologists catch serious heart defects before babies leave the hospital.
