In 2021 BitcoinSmiles, a crowdfunding organized by @BtcpayServer and @bitcoin_design to provide dental care to the "forgotten people" of 🇸🇻raised 1.97 #BTC.
5 years later (2026), we're excited to share the impact your donations still have in bringing smiles with #Bitcoin🧵👇
Our mission in western 🇸🇻 has begun. Yesterday (Dentist's Day),we conducted a medical/dental care event in El Ranchador,Santa Ana. Initially, check-ups were scheduled for 50 low-income residents of the community. The event was efficiently organized & operated throughout the day.
We are grateful for the unwavering support of community leaders Don Josué and Don Napoleón Sandoval🆘️, Dr. Josué Salazar🩺, the BitcoinSmiles team🦷 and collaborators⛑️ in bringing confidence and dignity to the community through oral rehabilitation.
In the coming days, our main clinical work with patients from Santa Ana begins, alternating with our clinic and mission in El Zonte. Happy Dentist's Day to our "old" friend @ChiquiBerrios 😅👌🧡 #BitcoinFixesTeeth
Monetary and multidimensional poverty in 🇸🇻 is critically concentrated in the western part of the country. We identify certain *cantones* in Santa Ana—and specifically the district of Tacuba (Ahuachapán)—as having some of the highest rates of extreme poverty in El Salvador ⛑️
During our field visits over the past year and a half, we identified (among other communities), sixty four low-income families in canton El Ranchador in Santa Ana and canton Ashuquema in Tacuba, Ahuachapán🩺
Dealing with diabetes,hypertension, liver issues(medication use),rheumatic pain & over 40 years of dental issues,Graciela (82) is always joyful. She raised 4 children, lives with 1 of her daughters. Supports herself by recycling cans-plastics or selling fish and household goods.
Due to boneloss and dysfunction resulting from tooth loss, she underwent a bite-raising procedure to increase her vertical dimension, regain space lost to severe tooth wear, correct temporomandibular joint issues, and improve masticatory function 🦷🇸🇻👌

In our 5th anniversary (september 2026) @BitcoinSmiles initiative is expanding into Santa Ana (western El Salvador) with a second treatment room. September is the oral health month in our country and will bring new bitcoin smiles to many other neighbourhoods 🇸🇻🧡🩺🦷

In 2005, in addition to working and leading a quiet life in a pleasant/ attractive part of the city, I was finishing my year of social service in dentistry in the mountainous area near El Zonte. I had already decided to open a clinic in that area 🦷⛑️🌊

Back in 2021 @DienteZonte and I started it with a simple idea: use Bitcoin to help people in El Salvador who couldn’t afford dental care.
2,971 Bitcoiners from around the internet donated and helped raise 1.97 BTC. That bitcoin is still paying for care today and bringing smiles to the neighbourhood.
For its birthday, I redesigned bitcoinsmiles.org to better tell their stories and hopefully bring positivity your timeline. We could all use a little more of that right now.
The initiative plans to expand into Santa Ana with a second treatment room.
