Our beloved animals are an essential part of our city’s fabric -- from the pets that become our family, to the cats that protect our bodegas, to the birds that soar through our skies. And, yes, even the pigeons. Today, the first-ever Council Animal Welfare caucus hosted a celebration in City Hall Chambers to honor these animals and the people who care for them. We honored the @wildbirdfund, NYC’s only wildlife rehab center, and recognized Long Island City Feral Feeders for caring for community cats across Western Queens. The Council will continue to fight for the wellness of all New Yorkers, including our animals!

The Frijoles Fire burned through the watershed that feeds Santa Cruz Lake in northern New Mexico, where 3,000 people farm with acequias built centuries ago. Now ash, silt, and fire retardant have the community watching their water closely. hcn.org/articles/watersheds-…

Texas farmers are struggling, and hemp could help save our farms and restore our soil. But the Ultra Wealthy have spent decades fighting to keep this valuable crop out of farmers' hands. It's time to let Texas farmers grow hemp without corporate interference or unnecessary government red tape.

👀Read @TheRevAl sending a direct message to @transportworker @TwuSamuelsen @kemp_mr : “I have fought for workers my entire life, and I know what real solidarity looks like. It does not look like this. Standing up for carriage drivers cannot mean chaining their futures to a dying trade that risks lives every time a horse panics in traffic. The mayor and the Council are ready to help with retraining and real jobs that carry a living wage and benefits. That is what Romanch’s Law, named for the young man this city lost, is built to deliver. A union president serving his members would be at that table, not carrying out a feud in the headlines aimed at whichever woman in public life has most recently drawn his ire. Philadelphia, Chicago, San Antonio, Paris and London have already moved on from carriages. New York can too. Our leaders should retire a relic that endangers people and animals alike, and retire, once and for all, the small and nasty politics used to defend it. We can welcome the world to New York without tragedy. We can honor workers without trapping them. And we can prove once again that this city meets change not with grievance, but with common sense and compassion.” nydailynews.com/2026/10/14/a…

One-third of NYC households share the experience of being pet owners. Thanks to the City Council's first ever Animal Welfare Caucus, we secured $1.5 million for the benefit of our beloved pets in the Fiscal 2027 Budget. We’re also proud to announce that next week, the Council will vote on Romanch’s Law, which would phase out horse-drawn carriages in Central Park — because animal safety, and the safety of New Yorkers, is always a top priority.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is ravenously taking over some of Texas’ most beloved public lands. New reporting from @Forrest4Trees reveals the company’s complete disregard for Boca Chica State Park: they want to privatize the entire park. Like the attempted transfer of Yosemite land to a private equity firm, this is another assault on protected public lands that could be lost forever just to enrich billionaires.

Forcing elephants to perform is the crime, NOT speaking out against it 🗣️❌🐘 Five PETA supporters were arrested on public property while protesting elephant rides run by a notorious exhibitor whose handlers have used sharp, steel-tipped bullhooks to force elephants to comply and has racked up federal animal welfare violations.

DC voters, you have a chance to make history this November. Initiative 86 would ban the sale of foie gras in the District. It is a public health issue and an animal welfare issue. Vote yes. pcrm.org/Yes86

Nearly half of U.S. bald and golden eagles have lead poisoning, often from lead ammo in gut piles. After the Citizen Potawatomi Nation released two captive-bred golden eagles, one died this way. Now the tribe is asking hunters to go non-lead.

It’s like Silent Spring again, but this time the mass poisoning agent isn’t the pesticide industry, it’s just hunters and for some reason we have a harder time standing up to them.
