Matt Walsh asks a transgender woman one question: “How do you know that you’re a woman?”
Her answer leads to a heated exchange about identity, social recognition, and what it actually means to be a woman.
Then Walsh demands a definition.
Matt Walsh: How do you know that you’re a woman?
Audience Member: I started listening to transgender people describe their experiences. One woman described looking in the mirror and not recognizing herself, hearing compliments like “you’re such a positive masculine role model” and feeling like they were talking about somebody else.
I was an Eagle Scout. I had great masculine role models my whole life. And yet I never felt like I belonged.
Matt Walsh: Why does that make you a woman?
Audience Member: As opposed to just a man who doesn’t get along with other men, or a man who’s depressed, or doesn’t feel at home in his body?
Matt Walsh: In what way does that make you a woman?
Audience Member: I know because they tell me.
Matt Walsh: You need them to tell you what you are?
Audience Member: Women. Yes. I trust the opinions of the women around me. It’s incredible, you might try it sometime.
Matt Walsh: If most women said they don’t see you as a woman, would you say, “I’m not a woman anymore”?
Audience Member: I know you like to say everybody’s supporting transgender people and yet they’re still killing themselves. But I’m standing here in a room full of people applauding you and asking how to reverse transgenderism in my home state. I’m not safe.
Matt Walsh: How are you not safe? You just said you’re standing in a room with people who disagree with you and you’re perfectly fine.
Audience Member: Maybe we’ll just end with this. We’re talking about womanhood. You know that you’re a woman. What is that?
Matt Walsh: What is a woman? Define it in the dictionary. Go.
Audience Member: A woman is somebody who is included and respected and seen and participates in society, recognized by other women.
Matt Walsh: Circular definition. Okay. Thank you. Good.
