My letter in @thetimes today about weasels and their decline (reported yesterday in some news outlets), causes and possible responses. 23 years on from submitting my PhD thesis on weasel (and stoat) populations, there’s some public interest. You just gotta be patient in this game

I’ve tweeted this before but it’s cool enough to be repeated. Green islands in autumn oak leaves. Leaf-miners encourage a fungal pathogen that delays senescence in that vital part of the leaf in which they are feeding, keeping it green and tasty for longer.

2 species which showed an increase in abundance in 2020 are rarities, the Shrill Carder bumblebee (Bombus sylvarum) & Ruderal bumblebee (Bombus ruderatus). Part of the reason for their success is likely the ongoing efforts of many people and organisations to conserve them. 5/

The 2 species which arouse the greatest concern from the analysis are the Bilberry bumblebee (Bombus monticola) & Moss Carder (Bombus muscorum). Both already listed as rare conservation-priority species. Our data shows that they are both continuing to decline. 6/
