Today, we remember Major Megan McClung who became the first female Marine officer killed in combat during the Iraq War, and the first female graduate of the United States Naval Academy to be killed in action. Major McClung was serving as a public affairs officer in the Al Anbar Province in Iraq when she was killed. Earlier in the day on December 6, 2006, she had been accompanying Oliver North and his crew in Ramadi. She then was escorting Newsweek journalists into downtown Ramadi when a massive IED destroyed her Humvee.
McClung's family had a history of military service. Her father was a U.S. Marine infantry officer who served in Vietnam, seeing combat in the Tet Offensive. Her maternal grandfather was a U.S. Navy pilot and her paternal grandfather served in the U.S. Army during World War II. McClung graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and accepted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.
The annual Major McClung Memorial Run at NAS Whidbey Island was established to raise money for wounded Marines and their families. The final resting place for Major McClung is in Arlington, Virginia, at Arlington National Cemetery.

Maj. Megan McClung became the first female Marine officer was died in the Iraq War when a roadside bomb struck her Humvee in Ramadi. A U.S. Naval Academy graduate, she was serving as the media officer for coalition forces across Anbar province, one of the most dangerous regions for American troops that year. Her guiding philosophy for engaging the press, "Be Bold. Be Brief. Be Gone," became a lasting principle for military communicators and is now engraved on her headstone.
McClung had voluntarily deployed into Ramadi to fill a public affairs gap for the Army's Ready First Brigade, escorting journalists so the American public could see the realities faced by troops during the Al Anbar Awakening. She was killed alongside Army Capt. Travis Patriquin, a key architect of the tribal engagement strategy that helped turn Sunni leaders against Al Qaeda, and Army Spc. Vincent Pomante III. Her death underscored a broader truth about modern warfare: in counterinsurgency operations, communication and coalition-building can be as consequential to national security outcomes as combat operations themselves.
Nearly two decades later, McClung's legacy continues to shape how the U.S. military approaches transparency, media relations, and the role of women in combat environments. Her example remains a reminder that understanding the full scope of military service, and the sacrifices behind it, matters for anyone who values an informed citizenry.

This morning, #TeamBlakespear gathered to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price in defense of our country — including Mission Viejo’s own Major Megan McClung.
My thanks to the City of Mission Viejo, Colonel Charles “Clay” Readinger, the San Diego Veterans Honor Color Guard, and all who organized today’s tribute.
Today, we honor, we express gratitude, and we are deeply indebted to the brave men and women who sacrificed everything so we could live freely. 🇺🇸
Reminder: Dignified transfer ceremonies at Dover are about honoring the fallen & comforting their families. They are NOT about politics. Today is a day for gratitude & unity, not partisanship. 🇺🇸
I was at Dover Air Force Base immediately following the deadliest attack on US troops of the entire war in Afghanistan. Dignified transfer ceremonies are about honoring the fallen & their families — nothing else.
Please save the political tweets for another time. #HonorTheFallen

U.S. Navy Approves McClung Class Medium Landing Ship for Marines
In December 2025 the U.S. Navy approved the McClung class Medium Landing Ship design for the Marine Corps.
These agile, smaller landing ships are built to move Marines and equipment directly to austere beaches under the Force Design 2030 concept.
The first ship will be named USS McClung (LSM-1) and the class will significantly improve the Marines’ ability to operate in contested littorals.
