Happy to say I'm officially a Ph.D. candidate! It helps when you have amazing committee members @TheSladeLab @KylieAllenVT @Biochem_Anne @Lahondere_Lab and the best advisor @JustinLemkulVT
It has been an eventful week in the lab! @amgoodberlet passed her qualifying exam, @jmaemontgomery gave a nice departmental seminar yesterday, and today @ligilpineda passed her prelim exam to advance to Ph.D. candidacy! Congrats to all!

Creating this mentorship program has been an incredible experience! Especially with the help of @nlyons77 @jmaemontgomery @BrittanyhVT3 and Spenser Stone. We hope this program will help the students joining the @vtbiochem program have a great start to their grad school journey!
Last week was the wrap-up of a pilot mentorship program put together by the BcGSA! We want to help our first years with the adjustment to grad school and provide a way for them to have a support system during the transition. (1/3)
We intend to implement this in student's first semester moving forward. Thank you to all of our volunteer mentors, as well as our mentees, (2/3)
Encourage your faculty mentors to attend, as this next event is open to all in biochem!! Come be creative while talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion with @shernita1908!

Recently, the @JustinLemkulVT Lab attended #BPS2023! In the spirit of conference season, we want to feature @ligilpineda, third-year Ph.D. student who was able to present her work in two different poster sessions! She also received a travel award from the conference! 🤯 (1/4)
"... related to Parkinson's disease. I love mentoring undergraduate and graduate students stepping into the dry lab world and being a part of an amazing inclusive lab. While imposter syndrome can hit hard during graduate studies..." (3/4)

#NSURP2023 is here!
Supported by @NSF, NSURP is a community-driven initiative to create rewarding remote summer research experiences for BIPOC and Latinx undergraduates in the fields of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer.
Applications for our 2023 cohort are now open!
Today we are featuring 2nd year master's student, Spenser Stone from @KylieAllenVT lab! She told us a little bit about her perspective on research, "Something I love about research is being able to ask any question that pops into my head and take that to the bench. (1/4)
Because we don't see many examples of enzymes like this in nature, this work has really pushed me out of my own box and encouraged me to think collaboratively and creatively!" (3/4)
