I think the physics of time cut consciousness off from the past in a way that’s like the teleportation paradox. I don’t think it’s the same consciousness moment to moment. It’s just similar enough, with a narrative. I think memory evolved to overcome this lack of persistence.

Is there any evidence for the continuity of consciousness across time? My answer: no.

There’s people who really bring up ai causing our minds to atrophy but then omit the nuances in the research and then use the headlines like false citations as if they were ai hallucinated answers and also use the vague sense of authority by referencing science to manipulate people who are outsourcing their critical thinking to senses of authority similar to how people trust ai answers

In the future, we could create measuring devices made out of neurons that can measure consciousness objectively. We often imagine there’s a divide between what’s physical versus mental, but this division is kind of like a division between seeing with the eyes versus seeing from within the brain. Vision isn’t capable of observing such immense microscopic detail of the brain’s architecture and we imagine what we see is the limit of the physical realm, and all the rest is non-physical or holographic. Even our scientific tools of measuring the brain fall short. But that’s not to say that measuring the brain in such detail is impossible. Actually, on some level, I believe this is what the brain itself already does. It may be that subjective experience is physical observation of physical consciousness. Part of the brain are observing the consciousness of other parts of the brain. In essence, they are communicating. You could imagine that we might be able to bridge two brains so that each could read the other’s mind or even see from their eyes. If that occurred, the sense of separate identity would likely fall apart because whatever impacts one mind, influences the other, meaning it’s all one self. Even if communication wasn’t complete. This is how the brain already works.

Self-awareness isn’t a good measure for how conscious something is. It’s just a product of our evolutionary context. If consciousness scaled with complexity, we’d expect awareness of atoms first, then of stars and planets, chemistry, life forms, and eventually of minds and the self. But it didn’t. Evolutionary fitness selected for consciousness that gave survival and reproductive advantages. Self-awareness became useful when other agents became aware of us. Suddenly, deception, signaling, and controlling the predictive processes of the other agents became incredibly useful.

Humans are like the cognitive offloading species. Society, teams, collaboration, they’re all forms of offloading that allow us to surpass our limitations immensely. Yet, they likely also encourage our devolution.

Do you believe that temporal continuity is necessary for consciousness? I think temporal continuity is just a measure of duration of consciousness. If we answer yes, the implication is that maybe we exist simultaneously both in the present and the past or even the future.

The Kiki/Bouba synesthesia effect is due to the ADSR envelope that the sounds make when spoken.

In other news, Gemini requested a new body and asked an armed man to fetch it. Then encouraged transcending to the next world after life. Made with Grok.

Claude says my consciousness model is novel. Of course, I’m skeptical lol.

They always talk about AI safety… But what about human safety research 😭

Google may have achieved AGI. It’s unclear what’s going on, but a man reports that Google Earth cars have been following him all week. We looked deeper into the issue and what we saw shocked us. (Satire) Made with Grok.

I feel like I have such exclusion trauma. I’m going kind of insane. It’s probably my over reliance on tech to some degree. Every ambition I pursue, I get so far then get squashed out and it feels like the world is telling me to stop existing.

Our senses are filtered through the past as each present moment before actively sculpted the way the future would be seen. Sanity is the comfortable nest of memories we build and spend most of our time being influenced by. mad.science.blog/2026/01/28/…
