Post-interview chat with Murat Karayilan? Yes! For now I can say he loves Egyptian Um Kulthum's music. Following my interview with Murat Karayilan, I had an informal chat with him for about 20 minutes. The informal conversation focused less on politics and war; it was more on how he joined the PKK, what music he likes, his connections with football and Amedspor, his life routine and work especially in the past 12 years in the caves, what books he read and write, and what has made him shed tears. Yes, he told me that, too! Now that I have watched it again, my voice is not so good because of the echo in the cave with one camera and it seems my mic was off, but I believe @the_amargi readers and viewers would like to watch this, too! Stay tuned for this!
#EXCLUSIVE: I spent ten days in the PKK headquarters and caves before finally reaching Murat Karayılan for this exclusive interview with The Amargi. We begin with the wars reshaping the Middle East and then break down the peace process, in which Mr. Karayılan clearly calls on the Turkish state to end policies of denial and annihilation, and on Kurds to abandon rebellion and work toward establishing a democratic state. Mr. Karayılan has not spoken to any external media outlet for the past 12 years. We at The Amargi were lucky to be the first. If you are following the Kurdish question, the peace process and Turkish politics, this interview is for you. I will try to write my reflections on those 10 days after some rest when time allows. Enjoy the interview for now. youtube.com/watch?v=j_oP8Qrw… ,

A new analysis argues that Peshmerga unification and talks on reopening Kurdistan’s parliament could mark a shift from political survival to statecraft, if announcements become reform. By Bamo Nouri: theamargi.com/posts/are-kurd…

Are Kurdish elites finally listening? Peshmerga unification, renewed KDP–PUK cooperation and efforts to reopen parliament suggest change may be underway. But announcements aren’t reforms.

There was never a time that I hoped I’d be proven wrong.
I hope there is a quick containment & de-escalation of the war in Israel & Gaza. Otherwise, I fear the Middle East is on the precipice of a devastating regional war. All the posturing by international & regional political leaders sounds like the Guns of August. I pray I am Wrong.

In my latest for @ConversationUK, I examine a strategic paradox: as Washington intensifies pressure on Tehran, withdrawing from Iraq could strengthen one of Iran’s most important sources of strategic depth.

KRG PM Masrour Barzani is increasingly sounding the alarm over the US military withdrawal from Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region. The KRG has limited means to defend itself should another round of escalation erupt between the US and Iran. In particular, Kurdistan's airspace would be highly vulnerable to drone and missile attacks by Iran and Iran-aligned Iraqi militias, as KRG currently relies heavily on the US military for air defence and deterrence. ft.com/content/c4789501-8499…

A former senior adviser to the British Foreign Secretary says the UK government should impose sanctions on Iraqi Kurdish officials amid the rise in irregular migration, arguing that the government “needs to ramp up the pressure on Iraqi Kurdistan” because small-boat operations are “almost entirely controlled by mafias from that region”. While the KRG is undeniably responsible for creating conditions that have driven many young people to leave their homes and allowed smugglers to exploit their desperation, I do not think KRG officials have any considerable authority over these smuggling networks. Most operate primarily in Europe, and the KRG has generally been cooperative when it comes to apprehending smugglers wanted by the UK. thenationalnews.com/news/uk/…

As the initial hype around Kurdistan's Peshmerga unification begins to fade, the picture is becoming clearer. What has been unified so far are the salaries, administration, and legal procedures of the two largest partisan forces, while a nearly equal number of personnel have remained outside the reform process from the outset. What remains largely unchanged even for the reformed units are central command and control, the appointment of genuinely nonpartisan commanders, and the parties’ respective areas of influence. On the positive side, officials acknowledge these shortcomings, even if they are not reflected in official statements, and describe the changes so far as only a first step in a much longer unification process. theamargi.com/posts/peshmerg…
