The US seems to keep these fights quiet.
BREAKING: Iran has launched anti-ship missiles from Sirik in southern Iran toward vessels under US escort in the US-backed southern Omani corridor of the Strait of Hormuz, with several large-scale explosions heard in the Strait over the past hour and at least one oil tanker confirmed hit, per initial reports.
Local sources say "a serious naval conflict" is ongoing tonight. The explosions in the past few hours are in the double digits, with further explosions minutes ago around Qeshm Island.

First Mission: The Ghost Ship (Part 1) #Amalgaverse
An away team made up of Colonel Jack O'Neill, Doctor Daniel Jackson, Doctor Rodney McKay, and the android/AI Rommie has been dispatched to investigate a derelict freighter. After parking the puddle jumper in the ship's hangar, the team discovers that the bay doors are jammed open to space, forcing a call on how to proceed. They follow Jack's call.
The away team seals their helmets and exits into the airless bay. O’Neill cloaks their ride (just in case) and leads them to the interior airlock. Once it's sealed behind them, McKay triggers repressurization. Air floods in and fogs on contact, vapor boiling off the frozen walls. A breathable foothold at last.
The pressure hatch ahead unseals into a corridor running through the freighter’s underbelly, an industrial sub-level, narrow and dank, pipes sweating and venting coolant into the dark.
“I think I’ve seen this movie,”notes O’Neill to no one in particular. “It doesn’t end well for Samuel L. Jackson." Then, throwing a look to the others: “So where to?”
Rommie wants control before anything else. Waste no time in going straight to the bridge where they can immediately confirm that every breach is sealed and the entire ship secured before committing to anything deeper. The methodical call, it puts the freighter’s systems in their hands.
Daniel motions to his brand spanking new Starfleet-issued tricorder. A single faint contact flickers somewhere ahead - which should be impossible on a ship this dead. "Someone may be alive down here,”he says. "We have to investigate."
“SomeONE or someTHING?”counters McKay who is wholly focused on his own tricorder, and another reading. The whole ship scans dark but for one compartment, still bleeding the last of a dying reserve to hold a localized containment field. When that power fails, the field fails, and whatever’s inside likely with it. He wants a look before that happens. “And it’s on the way,”he sells it. “Just a tiny detour; a slight delay."

You've decided to investigate a seemingly derelict freighter broadcasting an emergency beacon.
O’Neill shuttles the rest of the away team - Daniel Jackson, Rommie, and Rodney McKay - to the ghost ship, threading the jumper into the open bay and setting down inside. “Just like riding a bike,”he says with some satisfaction. “A twenty-six-foot-long, fifteen-and-a-half-foot-wide bike with forward-mounted drone launchers and a cloak.”
But you quickly realize there’s a problem. The hangar doors are jammed open to space, and won’t cycle shut. What’s your next move?
Rommie suggests forcing the doors shut manually. Her android frame handles extended vacuum without a problem, so she can just walk out and crank them closed by hand. It’s slow and exposed, but the sure fix. “The catch isn’t the vacuum,”she adds. “It’s the anomaly. Those energy pulses hit while I’m out there, and they could knock me offline before the job’s done." And then, catching Daniel staring: “What?” Daniel pops his eyebrows, considering: “Nothing. You just remind me of someone."
McKay pitches running a hard line from the jumper to the dead servos. It will power the doors shut, but potentially bleed some of the jumper’s reserves. “Potentially?”asks O’Neill. “Potentially - possible,”he non-commits. “More or less. Ish."
O’Neill considers just leaving the bay open and heading in directly through the interior airlock given they’re already wearing EV suits. "We're dressed for the occasion." It’s the fastest way in, but their ride ends up parked inside an airless bay, so any retreat means crossing vacuum again.

BREAKING: The Trump administration has quietly added 37 troops to the Iran war casualty count this week without explanation, 29 Navy sailors and 8 Marines, bringing the total to 880 wounded or dead, per WaPo.
More than half the casualties are now logged under "Overseas Operations" rather than Operation Epic Fury, a reclassification the administration made after the July ceasefire collapsed, with Trump and senior officials claiming since then that the conflict is not a war and Vance saying on September 3 that "right now, there is no active shooting."
It comes a week after as many as five US military deaths are still missing from the same database, a discrepancy that remains unresolved.
We have a tiny new tick to worry about
Scientists just discovered a new virus carried by a tick that's already living in more than two dozen US states. The virus hasn't been found here yet, but the tick has.
It's called the Asian longhorned tick. Females lay 1,000 to 2,000 eggs without ever mating, so one tick hitching a ride can start a whole new population. A male tick has never been found in the US.
It was first confirmed in New Jersey in 2017, probably arriving years earlier on an imported animal or a traveler. Now it's in 24 states from New York to Alabama and west to Missouri.
On livestock, it shows up by the thousands. Cattle have died from the blood loss, and it spreads a parasite that causes deadly anemia in cows.
It's less interested in people than our native ticks, and it hasn't been shown to make anyone sick in the US. But in Asia, it carries Dabie bandavirus, which kills up to 30% of the people it infects.
It's smaller than a sesame seed, so do the basics. Use repellent. Stay in the middle of the trail. Check yourself, your kids and your dog after you come inside. Keep your pets on tick prevention, which works on this tick too.
And if you find a tiny brown tick you can't identify, drop it in rubbing alcohol and send it to your state extension office. They'll want to have a look at it.

BREAKING: Ukrainian drones have just struck Russia's Perm oil refinery this morning, one of the country's largest and one of six refineries that together produce about half of Russia's diesel, with the refinery now on fire.
This comes as the US, the world’s largest diesel exporter, is preparing a 90-day export ban that Trump is inclined to announce by the end of the week. Russia, the second largest, already halted theirs.

Democratic @NYCMayor Zohran Mamdani promised during his campaign that he would arrest Netanyahu if he set foot in NYC. Since then, Mamdani has abandoned this promise, and recently announced that he will not be joining the protest campaign against Netanyahu.
Instead, under Mamdani's leadership, the NYPD is arresting antiwar activists protesting Netanhayu. This is a horrific betrayal of the antiwar movement and the Palestinian people.
Mamdani also re-hired Zionist and billionaire heir Jessica Tisch as NYPD Commissioner and endorsed Governor Kathy Hochul for re-election and Congressmember Hakeem Jeffries for U.S. House Speaker, both of whom are arch Zionist Democrats.

I took a lovely hike up to an alpine lake today, just back from in from the Amazon. I brought my stove to make a cup of tea. You can play the little video to see wind on the lake and to hear the sound of peace.
I am not happy to have returned to the US.
