Important interview with Cuban Deputy FM Carlos de Cossio: Q: How do you think about Venezuela today, what's happened there and indeed what's happening in that country today? A: We're trying to understand it, that's what I can say. Q: Would Cuba ever relinquish control of resources in the way that we've seen Venezuela do over the last few weeks? A: No, I wouldn't see why we would do it, because the resources in Cuba belong to the people of Cuba. Our government does not have the right to deprive them of that and hand it over to another country. Q: Do you still see Venezuela as an ally in the same way, under this interim president? Of Cuba? A: Yes. It's a friendly country. Q: But not an ally, you wouldn't say ally. A: No, ally is a strong word. Q: Do you think that Delcy Rodriguez, who is in power, has betrayed the Bolivarian Revolution? Has she changed, do you think, over the last few months? A: She seems to have changed. Q: How so? Tease that out a little bit more. A: No, I won't go further than that. Q: When you look back on the 2024 election in Venezuela, who do you believe won that election? Was it Nicolas Maduro? A: Nicolas Maduro. Q: You believe that to be the case. Is there a fear on your part, on the Cuban government's part, that your president, past leaders could end up here in the US in a jail cell alongside Nicolas Maduro? How real do you take that threat to be? A: We take real that there is the intention of some people in the United States for that to happen. But we find it unrealistic, we will not allow it.
