My book is out today! It's a history of mass incarceration and deportation told through the stories of migrants in American jails. I am really proud of it and would love to talk about it with students, colleagues, lawyers, activists, anyone! amazon.com/Migrants-Jail-Ame…

William & Mary is hiring an assistant prof of Modern African American history! I have found this to be a great place to be a jr faculty member—terrific students, colleagues, & public education. (And we graduate 100+ history majors a year!) careers.historians.org/jobs/…

The busiest port in North America is 45 minutes down I-35 from Texas’ infamous migrant prison. I try to demystify their relationship in the April issue of Field Notes brooklynrail.org/2026/04/fie…

Despite understandable attention on Minneapolis and other flashpoints of enforcement, it's the Miami field office that tops arrest rates in 2025 and 2026. Yet you wouldn't know it given relatively low profile approach. nytimes.com/2026/03/20/us/ic…

I encourage every local reporter who follows me to figure out which buildings in your city DHS is using to detain immigrants. Everyday offices, rented years ago, are becoming makeshift detention sites. Leases should be available via GSA. DM me for help. investigativepost.org/2026/0…

IMPT from Over the Weekend… Blueprints of the proposed mega warehouse ICE jail leaked. This would jail 10,000 people, making it nearly 50% larger than America’s largest jail. You can zoom way in to see how many people who go in a single more. ..

BREAKING: Dan Ceisler, the new sheriff of Pennsylvania's Bucks County, just announced he has terminated his county's 287(g) contract with ICE. Ceisler defeated GOP sheriff who'd joined the ICE program in November, & ran on quitting it; we reported then: boltsmag.org/sheriff-of-buck…

All summer, I’ve been speaking to a Nigerian mom of two kids who won fear-based protection in an immigration court. Under a previous admin, she would have likely been released, but ICE refused to let her out and tried to deport her to Ghana -> @MotherJones motherjones.com/politics/202…

The implications of this decision reverberates beyond LA. It effectively given DHS the green light to pursue these tactics across the country because it's clear it won't uphold future decisions from other district courts that also prohibit profiling during immigration arrests
🚨The Supreme Court today gives Trump a license to engage in racial profiling, with Justice Kavanaugh writing in concurrence to expressly endorse ICE and Border Patrol targeting any Latinos they observe in Los Angeles speaking Spanish and then demanding their papers.

Only a fraction of people murdered by ICE & CBP die in their jails. They deport many to their deaths, drive others to die by making the path to the US deadly, & do deadly policing near the border. But as new cages for immigrants go up around the US, so too will jail deaths. AND
🚨Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old Canadian citizen and longtime U.S. resident, died in ICE custody in Florida while awaiting deportation over past drug convictions. His death spotlights rising concerns over detention conditions. open.substack.com/pub/theint…...

It really speaks to the power of the Columbia student worker union that the administration is pulling this shocking bullshit. They know their pathetic capitulation to trump will be hampered by the only group on campus organized enough to fight back. Vichy on the Hudson for real.
[BREAKING] Since May, Columbia admin has been secretly working to eliminate graduate teaching jobs while negotiating with SWC for a new contract. Out of ~200 instructor jobs in a regular year, we know of only ~10 that have been appointed.
