Thank you for bringing @BLET to #OnlyInDistrictOne and for recognizing me as a "true friend to labor." As Ranking Member of the @TransportDems Rail Subcommittee, I am fighting for the issues important to you: surface transportation reauthorization, rail safety, and the impact of AI on the rail workforce.
Working near live tracks can turn deadly in seconds.

Thank you to @BLET for inviting me to speak at their sixth national convention. Since 2020, 54 rail workers have been killed on-the-job and 19,000 others injured. These aren’t just numbers. Behind every statistic is a loved one: a parent, a spouse, a brother, a sister, a child, a friend.
Over 400 #safety recommendations to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the railroads and others remain open with little to no action taken to implement them and save lives.
In fact, 40% of our recs to the FRA have been unanimously designated by the Board as “unacceptable action.”
The gap between a recommendation and its implementation isn’t measured in time, and it sure as hell isn’t measured in cost. It’s measured in people.
How many more Dereks need to die before action is taken (Baltimore)? How many more Chrises (South Carolina)? Mathews (Houston)? Louises (Ohio)? Michaels (Alabama)? Marks (Michigan)? How many more families in a family assistance center asking us if their loved one ever had a chance (California)?
Rail workers are dying. Their families deserve action.

This is a win for rail safety! I am proud to be a long time supporter of the two person crew standard. Now let’s make it permanent in statute! @TransportDems @AFLCIO @Labor_Caucus @BLET766

The Union Pacific/Norfolk Southern mega merger would make one company richer than most countries on Earth, while raising prices for Americans.
The Teamsters Rail Conference, which is made up of BLET and BMWED, represents more than half of Union Pacific's and Norfolk Southern’s unionized workforce. We are leading a broad-based coalition to oppose the merger.

.@UnionPacific wants to "talk facts" about its merger. Here are the facts:
❌ More unions support the merger
✅ Unions opposing it represent more than 7 in 10 UP and NS union workers

The most unsafe railroad in America, Union Pacific, wants to acquire Norfolk Southern in the largest railroad merger ever — making trains longer, creating more blocked crossings, and hiking everyday costs.
Take action now and tell the Surface Transportation Board to deny this merger: RailMergerComments.org

Railroads opposing heavier trucks because bigger equipment creates additional safety & infrastructure concerns is a perfectly reasonable argument..
It does, however, require everyone to temporarily forget what has happened to train length & tonnage over the last fifteen years.
Last week, GoRail and @leagueofcities brought together safety, public works, and Capitol Hill experts to dig into a proposal moving through Congress: a 10-year "pilot program" that would raise the federal truck weight limit from 80,000 to 91,000 pounds.
Panelists included leaders from the @NoBiggerTrucks and @APWA_UST, along with law enforcement and House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee staff.
Here's what they had to say about the proposal and the policy fight ahead: gorail.org/truck-size-and-we…

Nearly 23,000 union jobs gone in ten years.. A combined workforce down 31%.. Now 1,200 promised jobs are supposed to reassure railroad workers about the largest rail merger in modern history.
If those jobs are real, make them enforceable. Require vacancies to be filled as workers retire. Put the commitments in the STB order and attach consequences when they aren’t met.
Rail labor has spent enough time negotiating over promises.. We should be negotiating over guarantees.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters joins Teamsters Canada and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) in calling on Canadian National Railway (CN) to immediately stop operating trains through active wildfire zones and put the safety of Teamsters Canada rail members first.
A recent viral video on social media shows a CN freight train engulfed in flames while traveling through an active wildfire in Northern Ontario. The train was operated by Teamsters Canada Rail Conference members, whose quick thinking and professionalism ensured that no one was injured. But those workers should never have been put in that position. CN should never be sending train crews into such dangerous conditions.

O’BRIEN, ZUCKERMAN REELECTED TO SECOND FIVE-YEAR TERM LEADING TEAMSTERS
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced today that Sean M. O’Brien and Fred Zuckerman have been reelected to another five-year term as General President and General Secretary-Treasurer, respectively, renewing a mandate for powerful, militant leadership on behalf of 1.3 million rank-and-file Teamsters across North America.
The O’Brien-Zuckerman Teamsters United slate was elected by white ballot at the union’s 31st International Convention in Las Vegas following a secret ballot vote of 1,572 delegates. All voting delegates were democratically elected to the convention by rank-and-file members from more than 330 local unions across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. No opposition candidates received enough votes to meet the Teamsters’ constitutionally required threshold to challenge the O’Brien-Zuckerman team.
“This victory belongs to rank-and-file Teamsters. When we were sworn into office four years ago, our leadership team committed to building a bigger, faster, stronger union, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. We’ve organized more than 100,000 new members, won historic agreements including a record contract for 340,000 members at UPS, and put rank-and-file members back in the driver’s seat. The Teamsters is now the most aggressive, effective, and respected labor union on Earth,” O’Brien said. “Over the next five years, we have a lot of work ahead of us. The Teamsters face big fights at UPS and Amazon, and we are prepared to tackle those head on with the militancy and organization that has defined our administration. We will keep growing and never stop working for the members.”
“The Teamsters are stronger, more secure, and more prepared to take on greedy employers than at any point in our 123-year history. We have more than $1 billion in total assets, and our Strike and Defense Fund stands at approximately $365 million, providing the ammunition to take on the boss and protect our members,” Zuckerman said. “The Teamsters have accomplished so much to expand our ranks, exert real political influence, and safeguard our members in an ever-evolving economy. But we’re just getting started. The future is bright and the state of the union is strong in the Teamsters.”
O’Brien is a fourth-generation Teamster from Local 25 in Charlestown, Mass. Zuckerman joined the Teamsters more than four decades ago as a rank-and-file member in Houston and later went on to lead Local 89 in Louisville, Ky. Together, they bring an aggressive grassroots approach to taking on employers and prioritizing member involvement in the union.
Over the next five years, O’Brien and Zuckerman have pledged to continue the fight at UPS and Amazon, strengthen Teamsters density in core industries, defend and improve contracts across every division of the union, and build even bigger bipartisan coalitions to pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act and other legislation to benefit working people.
The O’Brien-Zuckerman Teamsters United slate will take the oath of office in March 2027.
