SVB does not deserve a bailout. A deep look at their financial statement reveals how horrific they were at risk management. And in my opinion incompetence explains only part of it. Moral hazard must have been at play. A thread. 1/

From trading data to vested interests, retail interest to punitive taxation, momentum is gathering to remove the structural deadweights blocking further ETF adoption in Europe. Thanks to @psarofagis #ETFs #Europe etfstream.com/features/europ…

39% (>2x normal levels) of global #ETP flows went to Europe YTD. More could come as we expect: - a consolidated tape (better liquidity) - inducements ban (helps intermediary distro for #ETFs vs. MFs) - retail/digital platforms (e.g. ETF savings plans) @ETF_Stream @GlobalXETFsEU

5 ETF stories I’m watching right now… 1) Morgan Stanley ETF flows. Inflows into their ESG ETFs are basically nonexistent 3+ weeks after entering space. It’s obv very early, but think huge litmus test for future of ESG ETFs since MS has *significant* distribution capabilities.

Active ETFs have captured 36% of net flows into ETF so far in 2023, a big jump from 14% last year, which was a record. Further over 500 of the 1000 have seen cash come in so far. Stunning numbers, especially if you think about where the state state they were in 5yrs ago

Amid all the talk of PFOF, a more problematic aspect of EU retail market structure is being overlooked: single market-maker venues. The MiFID II review gives Brussels a chance to tackle this issue but the window is rapidly closing. Read more: bit.ly/41dYa2f

In 1993, when ETFs first launched, U.S. equity mutual funds were charging 1.16% annually on average compared to SPY’s initial 0.20% fee. SPY’s launch would set in motion a still ongoing pricing battle between the two products. #ETFs $SPY

The volume in $TSLA lately is unreal, it's regularly trading more than the next 5-6 stocks COMBINED and double $SPY. On pace to trade over $6T worth of shares this year.

New note out today predicting that non-transparent active ETFs could be extinct within two years (or at least very close to it) as many will likely liquidate or convert to transparent. After nearly 3yrs they have measly $4b vs $364b for transparent active w/ 72% of them <$100m

ETF Myth Buster - Over the past 25 years, there's been no relationship between ETFs' organic growth (annual flows/beginning AUM) and market performance (as measured by the @MorningstarInc U.S. Market Index). ETFs have been growing rain or shine.

Active ETFs captured 14% of total net ETF flows this year, their highest take to date (and this doesn't include conversion assets). Not bad considering they only make up 4% of assets. This is a chart I'll be watching a lot in coming years.

If there was a museum for ETF charts this one from @psarofagis should be hanging in it. Shows ETF issuer market share by assets, flows, products, revenue and trading. It's all there. Enjoy..
