The AFL has condemned the MCG spectators who threw bottles at umpires at the end of the preliminary final between Hawthorn and Brisbane. afl.com.au/news/1616125/afl-…

Ray Chamberlain on @abcsport: he gets possession, the ball is not pinned, there’s an arm free, he’s got to make an attempt to get rid of it. The rule is reasonable time. He gave him a week in the context of this game. Umpires have also got to demonstrate courage. That’s what he’s paid to do, and he delivered

Umpires boss Stephen McBurney spoke in 2024 about this exact rule. Where a player has only one arm pinned the umpire won’t blow the whistle. They will give the player time to get a disposal away. If he doesn’t it’s holding the ball. It’s an extraordinary decision but it’s the correct call @FOXFOOTY

This has nothing to do with that trade in isolation and whether it's "fair" or not. You can't ban stupid. If The Bulldogs wanna throw away first round picks for a VFL level player then they should have every right.
This is about manipulating the system so that they can use the compensation pick 5 as an asset in this deal. If compensation wasn't a thing we would be laughing at the Bulldogs and not getting outraged at the AFL.
Get rid of compensation picks
Get rid of priority picks
Get rid of assistance packages
Get rid of academy picks
Get rid of Father-Son picks
Let clubs decide their own fate with good decision making and planning and not leave it up to the AFL to be the arbiter of what's fair or not

My question to the AFL is: How do you expect bottom and middle sides to become good sides when you continuously help the top sides get get players they want for next to nothing, mostly from or impacting bottom sides.
Brisbanes Academy, plus FA’s, Geelong Butters and Greene, etc

1. This shouldn't be allowed.
2. Lets say there's an "agreement" between Port and Geelong to do this. What's stopping Geelong from simply not picking up the phone during the trade period?
I do think we match and try to get something better than simply Pick 5.

Hang on. What do you mean the FA compo pick would be 'part of the transaction'?
My understanding is that you either take the trade offer or you take the compo pick?
This idea of not matching in order to ensure you get the compo pick and the other club doesnt have to give up as much, and then facilitating a hand-shake deal over a secondary trade has already been adjudicated on.
Remember the Crows-B.Crouch-StK?

If the @afl allows a compensation pick to be used because a finals team doesn’t have adequate resources to trade, then allows an extra side deal, it is entrenching free agency as a tool for players to move from bad teams to good.
How dare they lecture clubs about long rebuilds?
