The Bird 10,000 genomes (B10K) project is an initiative to generate representative draft genome sequences from all extant bird species.

Thanks to Prof. Ara Mondadjem, Ben Smit and their team of ornithologists in Eswatini and South Africa. The B10K project has completed a successful field work season and will be able to provide high quality samples for the genus phase and the up coming species phase of

Southern African birds. Without collaborators in the field willing to do the crucial work for the project we would be at a loss. We move forward in the pursuit of creating high quality genomes for extant birds of the world and to enrich avian scientific research. #B10K #Science

What to do with so many bird genomes? #BirdBonanza We can study how the genomes are similar and how they differ. The #B10K found that woodpeckers and toucans an unusual proportion of repetitive-repetitive-repetitive-repetitive DNA. Read more nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Love your songbirds 🎶? The #B10K does too and we sequenced 149 new genomes for this group. We also find that their genomes are quite different from other birds. Read more nature.com/articles/s41586-0… #BirdBonanza

What’s next? We will continue working on these genomes to better understand bird phylogeny and the genomic basis of the incredible bird diversity. With support from @VILLUMFONDEN, the B10K has also started its Phase III, which will sequence >2200 genomes! 🤯(8/8)
