On October 4, BGI Group’s Humanitarian Response Task Force arrived in Nepal to support the China–Nepal emergency cross-border scientific expedition following the August 26 extreme geological disaster in the central Himalayas. The disaster, triggered by a high-altitude ice-rock collapse on the northern slope of Langtang Lirung, evolved into a destructive debris-flow chain, causing casualties and property losses in both China and Nepal. As part of the joint expedition, BGI will provide professional support for human remains identification through forensic DNA analysis, working in coordination with the China–Nepal scientific team and relevant Nepali authorities. Each confirmed identity matters deeply to the families awaiting answers. BGI brings long-standing expertise in genomics and forensic DNA identification, with previous humanitarian missions including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami response in Thailand and the 2018 Laos dam-collapse disaster. Guided by scientific rigor, humanitarian principles, and respect for local laws and procedures, BGI is committed to helping bring dignity to the deceased and comfort to their loved ones.
