If you want to understand one strain of the current economic mismatch between supposed free markets, government subsidies, agricultural production and real ecological devastation at the hands of men - then you need to be aware about the dust bowl. For some reason this seemed to be omitted from public school as I went through. This is arguably the best intersection of debt, technological growth, human flourishing, land conquering and societal development in the West I have ever read. Why are the Bison gone? Expansion out West and conflict between Native Americans and the US Government. Why is dirt from this western region spilled across the US? Speculation leading to farmers planting more just to keep up with plummeting wheat prices and increasing debt payments. How did short term speculation, rapid technology growth (hand plow to horse plow to engine plow) lead to efficiencies that ultimately surpassed human need and afforded the opportunity for debt which led to subsidies. The dustbowl is one example. This has been one of the sharpest history lessons I have ever experienced and has brought more awareness and understanding to me today - the lessons were there 100 years ago. We already had figured out how to feed society. We just ruined it with greed. It’s still happening today.

A mule team works its way up towards Donner Summit, c.1862. This colorized photo shows a couple of wagons, one covered and one not, filled with goods. This is the Dutch Flat Donner Lake Wagon Road, and the team is taking supplies up to the summit for the transcontinental railroad construction. I included the original black-and-white photo in the comments.

Newport Beach has seen nearly two straight weeks of humpback whale sightings, with familiar whales and their new calves spotted breaching and playing off the Orange County coast. Among them were “Chompers” and “Chris,” two well-known female humpbacks. ktla.com/news/california/new…

These are the countries from which my “likes” come. I’m saddened by the fact I have no Japanese friends, but blame my height. The last thing as tall as me in Japan toppled multiple buildings and fought a giant moth. 🤷🏻

The entire Malibu shoreline was filled with these jelly like creatures called Velella that sort of resemble Portuguese man o’ war but are not harmful. Never seen so many of these in one place.

Street vending blocks handicap access to sidewalks, break every healthcode, pay little in taxes and cook with propane tanks next to cardboard and bust streets.
🚨BREAKING: Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles have launched a taxpayer-funded program to provide FREE food carts to sidewalk vendors. Since some can’t afford food carts, LA County is making hardworking taxpayers spend nearly $3 million on 280 food carts to give away to new street vendors.

For Bee Removal Call Eli (626) 487-6052 I removed a struggling bee colony from a jacuzzi storage compartment in Chino Hills, California after rain soaked the hive and caused the comb to collapse. Wet honeycomb made the removal messy, but I cleaned out the space and relocated the bees so the colony could recover. #SaveTheBees

Strange chicken going ons. One of my hens identifies as a rooster jumping the ladies. One has a Trump Comb and mumbles something about taking over the coops of this world. I caught something about EggStein files and there seems to be an increase of poop b o m b s.

We’re so excited to be rising as an American farm and business. When we release the Cottage Line this year - it’ll be a game changer. This has taken three years to build and it’s finally growing into something really special. Every order helps us grow - every positive review helps us build trust with others - thank you each and thanks for cheering us and others working to do the same on!

Duck River, Tennessee — This is the future intake location for the Duck River Pipeline set to draw 32 million gallons per day out of the fragile Duck River, heralded as North America’s most biodiverse river. Residents in the Duck River Basin are pushing back on the land and water grab by the City of Columbia, TN that is part of a $520 Million project to be financed by the ratepayers with rate increases for drinking water set to go into effect today, March 1, 2026. #TheGreatWaterHeist DefendTheDuck.Org 🇺🇸 🎼 : the marshall tucker band

For Bee Removal Call Eli (626) 487-6052 Rancho Cucamonga – Victoria Gardens 🐝 I removed a packed beehive from a water meter box. Fresh brood, tons of larva, and bags of honey deep in the cavity. Carefully relocated the brood into a box and the bees immediately started clustering onto it. Back in 5–10 days to finish the job. #savethebees

I thought I knew everything about my American heritage. I knew my paternal grandmother was a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR), but not the details. I just found out that the ancestor was Franz Christian Hootman. When he was 16 he was kidnapped by the Prince of Hess and sold to King George the third of England to fight the colonists of America. His father was a wealthy man and could have rescued his son but didn't. One rumor is that it was over a "dispute regarding a girl." Christian initially refused to join the troops and was given thirty lashes for three consecutive days. He finally consented to join up, but not before telling his father, "I'll go, but I will never fire a gun against the Americans and I will never return to the Fatherland. On December 25, 1776 he was struck by a gun carriage and suffered a fractured leg. During the early morning, General Washington and his Continentals crossed the Delaware and captured Christian. The Americans treated him so well that he decided to reenlist after three months but will the Virginian regiment where he was a drummer boy until the end of the war. He received 600 acres in the headwaters of Buffalo Creek, West Virginia for services in the Revolutionary War, Virginia Regiment. Some of his descendants moved to Ashland, Ohio, where my grandmother was born. I've seen this picture of George Washington crossing the Delaware many times. Never did I imagine that an ancestor played a small role in this turning point in American history.
