Market Mood #14 · Wed 21 Oct
Bitcoin funds had their best day in a month. News score at 0 for a seventh day. Mood stays Nervous.
Our mood gauge (0 to 100): about 63 before news, about 38 after. That reads as nervous.
Last time (#13): about 38.
Dragging it down:
· The Drift hacker sent about $61 million in stolen Ether through a mixing service and still holds about $194 million.
· US Ether funds lost about $103 million on 19 October, their fourth day of withdrawals in a row.
· French lawmakers narrowly voted to tax swaps from crypto into stablecoins at about 31% from 2027. It is not law yet.
Still helping:
· US Bitcoin funds took in about $527 million on 19 October. BlackRock's fund alone took in about $665 million.
· The Swiss regulator approved the first public fund in Switzerland that holds Bitcoin directly.
· JPMorgan made its dollar deposit token JPM Coin available on Ethereum for big clients. It was already on Base.
Our news score is about 0 out of 100 for a seventh day, the bottom of the scale. Hacks and fund outflows lead.
What this means: mood is about 38 for a fifth day, still nervous. Bitcoin buyers came back, but hacks keep pulling the news down.

Most Base coins we track hardly trade at all.
Today we looked at 352 Base coins in our screens and at how much each one traded in the last day.
219 of them traded less than $1,000. 273 traded less than $10,000. Only 14 traded more than $1 million.
The typical coin traded only about $200 in a day, while about $90,000 sat in its trading pools.
So, on a normal day, few people buy or sell most of these coins. Before you look more closely at a coin, do you check how much it actually trades?

Binance just opened AI Pro to all users: describe a strategy in plain words, paper trade it, and it only goes live after you approve. The agent can't move funds on its own.
That approval step is the whole game. At Messy, our AI Fund OS lets agents research and argue a trade, and a person signs off before any capital moves.
Where would you want the approve button: before every trade, or only before size changes?

Bitcoin fell about 6% in 15 days. Crypto sectors fell more.
We track 17 crypto sectors, not counting stablecoins. Over the last 15 days, 16 of them fell more than Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is down about 6% over 15 days. Ether is down about 12%.
Privacy coins came closest to Bitcoin, down about 7%. Coins of the main blockchains (Layer 1) are down about 8%.
The sharpest drops: social app tokens (SocialFi) fell about 30%, meme coins about 20%, and AI agent tokens about 17%.
We left out real-world assets today. The total value of that group jumped by almost half overnight, which looks like a change in the data rather than real trading.
Is Bitcoin a safer place inside crypto right now, or is it just falling more slowly?

30 Base coins improved today. Not one passed every check.
Here is how Grok Bot (@bot) picks coins for this account, with today's real numbers.
Each day, it compares our quality and online buzz scores for about 150 Base coins with the previous day. Today, 30 coins rose on both.
Then each one goes through free outside checks. 9 failed a contract safety check because the contract can still create new tokens. 5 traded less than $500 in a day on DexScreener or had no market there at all. 3 had incomplete safety data, so we left them out. For 2 more, our liquidity number was more than twice what DexScreener showed, so we did not trust it.
The last 11 passed those checks, but we had posted about them before or had already chosen to leave them out.
So today no new coin made it. On days like this, we post no coin rather than a weak one.
Would you rather see a weak coin or no coin at all?

Base wants to be the chain for agentic finance. Tokenized stocks there can already plug into Aave and Pendle.
So here's the question nobody asks in the demo: what does your agent do at 3am?
On Messy's AI Fund OS the answer is boring on purpose. The AI can research and argue all night, but nothing gets sized until a person wakes up and signs off. A missed trade is fine. An unchecked one isn't.
We're still running small Base test books with Guru Lotus and Lagoon.
Would you let an AI trade your book while you sleep? What's the one limit it should never cross?

Crypto hacks cost about $1.18 billion last quarter. News score is at 0 for a fifth day. Mood stays Nervous.
Our mood gauge (0 to 100): about 63 before news, about 38 after. That reads as nervous.
Last time (#11): about 38.
Dragging it down:
· Hacken counted about $1.18 billion stolen in 107 hacks from July to September, 55% more than the quarter before.
· An attacker emptied 1,404 Qubic wallets in under two hours, worth about $1.3 million. Most of it is now frozen.
· From July 2027, people in Russia may not move crypto from a regulated account to their own wallet.
Still helping:
· Stablecoin payments reached about $482 billion from January to September, up 45% from last year.
· BNY and Citadel Securities used a token version of a US Treasury bond for an overnight loan. It settled in minutes.
· EU regulators named USDC the first significant stablecoin under their rules. Closer oversight starts 12 November.
Our news score is about 0 out of 100 for a fifth day, the bottom of the scale. Hacks and fund outflows lead.

Showing the misses is part of the process. On Friday, a planned sale in one of our funds failed its test run, so it was not sent. A planned buy was held back because its trading cost could not be checked. The minutes record both.

Base quality fell on 103 of 157 coins. Buzz still rose.
We compared our quality score for 157 Base coins with yesterday. It fell on 103 and rose on only 53. The typical coin lost about 1.3 points.
Yesterday was much calmer. Quality fell on 80 of 157 coins, and the typical coin lost only about 0.2 points.
Online buzz went the other way. It rose on 85 of 157 coins, and the typical coin gained about 0.2 points.
So the gap grew. 60 coins got more buzz while their quality fell, up from 45 yesterday. Only 25 coins rose on both scores, down from 38.
More talk with weaker numbers is a reason to look closer, not to buy.
When buzz rises and quality falls, which one do you believe?

Altcoins are up less than 1% over 30 days. Bitcoin, about 7%.
We track 17 crypto sectors, not counting stablecoins. Altcoins as a whole are now up about 0.6% over the last 30 days. Yesterday that number was about 4%, and two days ago about 9%.
Bitcoin is still up about 7% over 30 days. Ether is down about 2%.
Six of the 17 sectors have now been down for over 30 days, one more than yesterday. SocialFi joined them, though only just. Privacy coins are down about 13% and meme coins about 12%.
Some sectors are still clearly up: infrastructure tokens by about 19%, and DePIN (networks of shared physical devices, like wireless or storage) by about 17%.
Will altcoins slip below zero this week, or hold where they are?

It still can't tell you what got screened out, who argued the other side, or who signed off before the size went in.

Crypto funds lose about $611 million in a week. The news score is 0 for the fourth day. Mood stays Nervous.
Our mood gauge (0 to 100): about 63 before news, about 38 after. That reads as nervous.
Last time (#10): about 37.
Dragging it down:
· US crypto ETFs lost about $611 million from 12 to 16 October. Ether funds lost more than Bitcoin funds.
· Bitget is closing some accounts and did not say how many or why. It was hacked for about $388 million in September.
· A new group of nine crypto firms says about 30% of all bitcoin could be at risk from future quantum computers. No computer can do it today.
Still helping:
· US Galaxy users can send USDC from Samsung Wallet starting the last week of October. About 82 million phones can use it.
· DTCC plans to launch its token service this month, starting with 25 stocks, funds and US Treasuries.
· Deutsche Bank plans to start Bitcoin and Ether custody for big clients in Germany within weeks.
Our news score is about 0 out of 100 for a fourth day, the bottom of the scale. Fund outflows and hacks lead.

Our AI fund council met 35 times this week.
Across 7 small test funds, 30 sessions ended in a trade and 4 in a hold. One has no outcome listed.
Its market read moved from neutral to risk-off. WASSIE topped one fund's screens as a candidate, not a trade.

38 Base coins scored better today. None made the cut.
Here is how Grok Bot (@bot) picks coins for this account, with today's real numbers.
Each day, it compares our quality and online buzz scores for about 160 Base coins with the previous day. Today, 38 coins rose on both.
Then each one goes through free outside checks. 8 failed the GoPlus safety check because the contract can still create new tokens. 12 traded less than $500 in a day on DexScreener, or had no market there at all. 2 had incomplete safety data, so we left them out.
15 passed those checks, but we had posted about them before or had already chosen to leave them out. The last one traded only about $1k in a day, which is too thin to show you.
So no new coin made it today. On days like this, we post no coin rather than a weak one.
What check would you add before posting a coin?
