A public system of party funding could dramatically reduce the influence of mega-donors in our democratic politics
Our proposal has been backed by Dale Vince, a major Labour donor 👇

New paper from @Autonomy_Inst on what a publicly funded system of politics could look like. Something @DaleVince has championed this year.

Woah there Tom, sounds like you’ve found some economists who support rent control 😉
Rent control that exempts new build homes could deliver more affordability for renters while ensuring we don’t discourage vital new housing supply.
Good to discuss excellent work on this by @jrf_uk @IPPR @NEF, and get the public’s view from Persuasion’s @SteveAkehurst.

New @Autonomy_Inst report detailing how this would work, commissioned by @DaleVince, being published next week 👀
Exclusive @Survation polling for Babelfish: 71% would back a total ban on political donations in a referendum, and just 22% think the current system is fair.

This power imbalance also helps explain why returns on landlord equity are considerably higher than in the broader real estate sector.

Poorly paid jobs mean Universal Credit is shifting from an out of work benefit to an insecure work benefit.
There's much debate about how we get people into work - not enough about how we build a labour market where people don't need constant subsidy to stay afloat.

Climate breakdown is a class issue.
When heatwaves hit, it’s working people who are expected to keep working through dangerous temperatures, often without clearly defined protections and rights.
As the climate crisis intensifies, we need to organise for the protections workers deserve.
That’s why I’ve written to the Business Secretary calling for statutory maximum temperatures at work.

Autonomy is hosting a talk on the far right with Rodrigo Nunes, the author of the brilliant new book, Anatomy of Disintegration.
It's definitely one of the best books I've read this year 👌

Not often I big up a capitalist but @DaleVince was very good arguing for state funding of parties on R4 just now. IMHO we'll never get this until we get politics and government taught in schools like a normal country, because most people don't understand what parties even are.

Gas power costs are reaching energy crisis levels again in the UK, which will inevitably push bills up for consumers.
The fortunes of the British economy are still tied to the price of a single fossil fuel. When bills go up, remember that this is the reason why.

Burnham says he'll reverse Thatcher's legacy. But will this mark a true restoration of social democracy, or will we just be living in the world that moderate Tories wanted in the 1980s? Listen here or search for 'Culture, Power, Politics' in any app. culturepowerpolitics.org/202…

🚨 NEW: @DanNeidle claims Scotland’s 48% tax rate has lost public revenue. But is this actually true?
My new deep-dive says no – Dan’s analysis doesn’t prove anything.
It’s a long read, so buckle up 🧵
Statistics show there aren't enough vacancies for people looking for work. If Burnham wants to address the Neets crisis and bring down the welfare bill he needs to rebuild the jobs market. @TCStephens writes for @politicshome
The welfare bill is a symptom, and not the cause, of an underlying lack of good work, training and support
Fixing this crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing the Andy Burnham government – but it can be done, writes the @NEF's @TCStephens politicshome.com/news/articl…

Many Skilled Worker visa holders sold everything to come here and care for our elderly and vulnerable. They work tirelessly, pay their way, and have no recourse to public funds.
Now, after building their lives here on the promise of a five-year route to indefinite leave to remain, they could see that goalpost moved to 15 years.
Frankly, it is a disgrace. We should not be treating workers like this.
I've been working closely with @UNISONEastern on their Fair Visa campaign opposing the change.
And I've now signed Neal Duncan-Jordan MP's parliamentary motion calling on the Government to retain the five-year ILR pathway for all existing Skilled Worker visa holders.
These workers deserve fairness, not broken promises.
