Statistics show there aren't enough vacancies for people looking for work. If Burnham wants to address the Neets crisis and bring down the welfare bill he needs to rebuild the jobs market. @TCStephens writes for @politicshome
The welfare bill is a symptom, and not the cause, of an underlying lack of good work, training and support Fixing this crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing the Andy Burnham government – but it can be done, writes the @NEF's @TCStephens politicshome.com/news/articl…

Pleased to see the publication of my last report at @NEF, written with @TCStephens We found evidence that the rise in health-related inactivity may have been partly driven by the historic growth of precarious work, including zero-hours contracts 👇
Our latest analysis found that workers in poor-quality jobs are 3x more likely to drop out of work. And the biggest factors pushing people out: insecure work and a lack of autonomy in the workplace.

There's lots of discussion today on NEETs, welfare and employment policy - including a welcome PM announcement on ramping up vocational education in schools, as part of a serious drive to reverse the UK's post-Covid labour market trends.

Modelling we commissioned from @PolicyEngineUK finds this would be far more effective at raising employment than the previous Govt's misguided PIP reforms.

More broadly: a fundamentally different relationship between the state and people out of work - devolved, community-based employment support in place of DWP's rigid, rules-based approach, and better security for the self-employed and gig economy workers.

Rebuilding Britain's jobs market is one of the biggest challenges facing the PM. New stats show vacancies still lagging, employment below pre-Covid levels and too few opportunities for young people. My latest for @politicshome on three principles for a genuine policy reset:

Exc - PM planning speech next week addressing youth employment, with focus on boosting educational/vocational opportunities as well as apprenticeships Early intervention on this underlines Burnham's view tackling NEET problem is critical as youth unemployment continues to rise

It's also worth noting that thanks to @ToniaAntoniazzi's amendment, the passing of this Bill today modernises our Victorian abortion laws - decriminalising abortion. After years of campaigning, this is the biggest move forward in this area since David Steel's 1967 Abortion Act.
A full year after I was taking it through its Commons Committee Stage, it's great news that Labour's Crime and Policing Bill has completed its passage through Parliament and just became law. It will help fight crime and anti-social behaviour in all the forms we see today.

I pay tribute to Sir Brian Langstaff and his @bloodinquiry team for their eight years of work to finally get justice for those infected and affected in the contaminated blood scandal. There is still more to do, but without them we wouldn't have come as far as we have.
