On 17 October 1961, hundreds of Algerian Muslims were massacred by French police in Paris, with some estimates claiming the total number of deaths could have reached as high as 300.
They had peacefully demonstrated against a discriminatory curfew targeting Algerians amid their struggle for independence. Some victims were beaten, killed and later thrown into the River Seine.
