Summer baseball is here.
The College World Series. Summer leagues. Travel tournaments. Showcase events.
Everybody says they love baseball.
But baseball eventually asks for proof.
Long days. Short nights. Heat. Failure. Repetition.
You either love the dog days and the grind... or you don't.
The game always knows. ⚾️🔥

Sometimes you need to play as if you have nothing to lose. Play loose, be aggressive, take risks, and go all out! This mindset can help you play your best and defeat superior opponents.

If you’re a graduating high school senior headed to college baseball, go play in a collegiate summer league.
Skip the 18U travel tournaments.
Face older players. Learn from college players. See how they prepare and compete.
You’ll be better prepared when you get to campus.

High school players are still being recruited.
You’re not being slept on, you’re being evaluated based on do you have the ability to contribute immediately.
You may have to begin your development at a lower level, in order to prove you belong in the big time.

The extra 30-60 minutes a player spends each day:
- taking focused swings
- training bat speed
- working on timing
- building confidence
doesn’t feel like much in the moment.
But over 1-2 years…
it completely changes the type of player they become.
That’s why daily habits matter so much in baseball.

The average HS athlete trying to play in college makes these THREE HUGE MISTAKES:
They under EAT
They under TRAIN
They under SLEEP

You’re performance isn’t your identity, your preparation should be your identity. Preparation is a reflection of who you are and what you’re trying to become. The path will end, but the preparation will teach you how to survive beyond the game.

Being around MLB players will teach you 3 things…
1. They’re obsessed with improvement.
2. They master boring fundamentals.
3. They believe they’re the best before the world does.

One of the toughest things as a H.S. coach is seeing players reach their dream of college baseball… then a year or two later, they walk away from the game for whatever reason.
That’s why I always say:
Enjoy the game while you can.
It goes by faster than you think.

If your plan this summer is to travel all over the country playing ball, that’s up to you. But you better be able to lift, eat, sleep and workout at an elite level if you’re doing that because you want to play college baseball.
The physicality and skill level needed to play at that level are what matters. If you’re living in a hotel this summer, make sure you have a plan.
I’ve seen a ton of careers wrecked by traveling too much and not having a plan for the part of your development that will matter most when you get to college.

There are many analytical tools players on daily basis (Blast, Trackman, etc.) and it’s easy to get lost in the data.
How can we simplify?

Couldn’t do a handstand 1 month ago.
Did a full handstand walk and turn today.
The key? I got over the “Plateau of Latent Potential”
In simpler terms: I stayed consistent even when the progress was minimal/nonexistent.

Hire a S&C coach. Without question. A qualified S&C coach contributes significantly to athletic development (and much more), yet continues to be undervalued. It’s deeper than physical development as well (mental, emotional, nutritional…the list is quite extensive)
