When you go skiing in the winter, and see those big machines spitting out snow, know that they are spitting out purified proteins made from dead bacteria. I didnโ€™t realize this until recently! Basically, they take Pseudomonas syringae cells โ€” not engineered; a natural microbe found on plants โ€” and grow them up in huge bioreactors. The cells make ice-nucleating proteins, which sit on their outer membranes and help ice crystals form. The cells are concentrated, freeze-dried, and sterilized until only these proteins remain. The reason these proteins are useful is because they help water molecules form ice more quickly. Water can remain liquid even below 0ยฐC, and only freezes when enough molecules form into a crystal. The proteins have, on their surfaces, repeating snippets of amino acids that help water molecules organize into that shape. So these snow machines just blast super cold water with these proteins, and the two hit the air, mix together, and immediately freeze into snow.

Yes! Honestly the best start is a textbook. Like the โ€œprinciples of developmentโ€, โ€œthe molecular life of plantsโ€ or โ€œArabidopsis: an atlas of morphology and developmentโ€. For a more technical overview see Bowman and Moyroud 2024 on the ABC model ๐Ÿ‘

the full story is a bit more intense! 10-year-old jo nagai didnโ€™t just notice the butterflies โ€œlovedโ€ him. he conditioned caterpillars to associate lavender scent with mild electric shocks. after they became butterflies, most still avoided the scent and the aversion even showed up in their children and grandchildren who never got shocked. kid designed the setup, raised hundreds of insects across generations, and presented it at scientific meetings absolute legend โ€“ at National Capital Region, Republic of the Philippines

IIT Madras director V Kamakoti claims that when he wrote the IITJEE exam, only about 5,000 candidates took it. People have taken this number with zero attempts to validate it. Does it pass the smell test? Historical records are scant (in public domain) about IITJEE statistics. But I found a research report by Sreeharsh Kelkar, an MIT researcher, that claims 29,477 people were registered for IITJEE in 1978, and that number ballooned to 72,298 in in 1988. I have shared the pdf link and screenshot of Kelkar's data exhibit. If Kelkar's numbers are ANYWHERE near the truth, then about 65,000-70,000 people took the IITJEE when Kamakoti did, in 1985. His estimate of 5000, is 13x off - or an order of magnitude off. If you have some sort of STEM training, you will understand the magnitude of this. This is not a small ballpark error. Imagine if someone asked you to estimate their height. Instead of estimating 6 feet, you estimate their height as 78 feet (roughly an 8-storey building). This is the magnitude of Kamakoti's error. Imagine one more example. A doctor needs to prescribe you 5 mg of a drug. But instead, the doctor prescribes 65 mg. What do you think it says about the doctor? Now think of engine design, bridge construction, chip fabrication, etc. Everything the IITs stand for. What are the consequences of such errors? It would be ok if a layperson said this, but if an apex decision-maker made such an error, you wonder what other data they are using in their decision-making calculus. Are they even using data, or just running on intuition? Even more surprising is that people seem to be accepting this 5000 number uncritically. Why are the media not doing their jobs? What about the student activists? There's ZERO point in shouting Gen Z slogans on the streets and making cheeky memes if you cannot even fact check the high profile person who is apparently addressing your concerns. indiatoday.in/education-todaโ€ฆ kipdf.com/the-elites-last-stโ€ฆ

This is an important note. And consistent even in smaller classes. The illusion of objectivity in MCQs obscures the pointlessness. And ease of gaming....
Until 2005, the IIT-JEE gave you marks for wrong answers. Fully subjective. Handwritten proofs and derivations, graded by IIT professors. Wrong final number with sound logic? Still 7 out of 10. The Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2005 killed the exam. The JEE system was then shaped more by fear of lawsuits than by the hunt for great students. From 2006: Multiple choice with machine-read OMRs. Pre-RTI, picked students for how they reasoned. Post-RTI, for speed and precision under fire.
