Myth or fact? 'The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world'. This🧵explains how a scientic finding is wrongly used to lament the UK's biodiversity crisis, especially on farmland. bbc.co.uk/newsround/58863097

An incredibly important statement.
We are not the most nature depleted country. That's just a myth. We are one of the most human altered countries, i.e. one with the least amount of truly wild places. Our biodiversity is actually quite high for a small country, partly as a result of human intervention.

40% of the UK’s homegrown softwood timber supply is to be found in a 100 mile corridor either side of the Scottish-England border.

I carried out the heathland restoration work at Sutton Heath in the winter of 24/25 and it’s great to see that’s it’s now starting to produce some positive results.

I look out on to a farmed landscape, part of a shooting Estate. It is an entirely ‘keepered landscape - it is bang full of habitat and wildlife. The ‘keepering team on the Estate numbers 5 Beat and Underkeepers managed by an incredibly talented and entirely motivated Headkeeper. Curlew still nest here. Woodcock still Rode here. Barn owls double brood most years. Hares abound. Every one an indicator species. Every one of them thriving. All in very large measure because ‘keepering persists. This is a prime example of a joint economy in conservation. Most of the environmental gain here is funded by game shooting. Those outside shooting are free to knock it all they like, of course they can and many do. However, it is a productive and sustainable model that works up and down the country. You don’t have to ‘get it’, just accept that it works.

I wrapped up the thinning contract with NT Ickworth at the end of last week and moved the machines to the Cambs/Beds border. 1.5 hectares of overstood coppice to harvest on a SSSI site. I’ve worked in this particular wood for the best part of 20 years.

Pheasant nuggets for this kids this evening. We all got stuck in and made an extreme mess over everything 😄 egg up the walls and breadcrumbs up the stairs. But they're engaged with their food so I'll take it 😁

That's the bandsaw mill cleaned and ready for inspection by some potential buyers tomorrow. Hopefully they'll be pleased with what they see and I can move on with the next phase.

I use a saw everyday but I wouldn’t even no where to start on something like this. I certainly admire those that can.
Chainsaw carver files 📸 The skill shown by chainsaw carvers never ceases to amaze us. Just look at some of these creations! 🤯 Which one was your favourite? 📸 Tracey Welch and FJ

This is a fantastic, balanced piece written by Cat. Please give it a read. I may be in forestry but all of my clients are landowners and farmers. They would have all had an experience with SFI over the last couple of weeks. The knock on effects are felt across the sector.

A lot has been said on social media today about new tree planting after the government announcement. Most of what has been said has been utter nonsense. I’m not engaging. I’ll keep my head down and carry on managing these multifunctional woodlands for the future.

Latest government buzz with trees is let’s plant half a million in the next three year. While I still find quality aftercare like this, I say let’s stop pissing money up the wall and spend it on looking after what we’ve got a bit better

Sycamore Gap tree 🌳 lives ‼️ It’s good to see people genuinely heartened by now understanding that cutting off a broadleaved tree doesn’t kill it, but coppices it … However, the sprouts aren’t new trees. They are growth from dormant buds under the bark. They will each grow into a tree that is connected to the root system of the felled tree stump. If all sprouts are left to grow then the tree will become ‘stored coppice’ with multiple large stems crowded together. If the original stump had been smaller it would be possible to ‘single’ that is remove all the other stems apart from the best one to become a future single stem tree. There are lots of large multiple stem sycamores that are stored coppice, from being cut down during the World Wars. It won’t look the same as the original tree, but there is no reason to feel it will not regrow into a beautiful landmark.

Politicians need to stop saying such ridiculous things so I can go back to posting tree photos & not talking politics. As my followers will know, I love the countryside. This is not a “far-right fantasy”, it is reality in rural Britain. Although admittedly I tend to prefer cider.
🚨 NEW: Labour’s nature minister has called the picture of Britain as warm ale, a country pub and a black Labrador a “far-Right” fantasy that “never really existed”. • Jenny Riddell-Carpenter told a Labour conference in Liverpool she "lies awake" fearing the next election will be fought on rural life and that “the far-Right” will decide what it looks like. She said that vision would be “warm ale, a black Labrador by your feet in a pub that doesn’t exist” and described it as “a very far-Right nostalgic vision of Britain that we don’t want to have.” • She was made nature minister in July and is MP for Suffolk Coastal. She said Labour must set out its own “progressive vision for the countryside.”

How is this news? “A Tree species that is renowned for coppicing well has produced coppice regrowth” Well blow me down with a feather. Really BBC there are so much more important forestry and tree related items to report on.

Found a great example of multifunctional forestry this morning. Very tidy conifer 2nd or 3rd thinning producing quality log green light and some chip. 200yds up the track, a coppice habitat for dormice with a rope bridge. #positiveforestry
