I can’t place whether I sensed a defeatist attitude or political arrogance when @helenzille said “it doesn’t matter if you don’t like me, or if you don’t like the DA even, as long as you love Joburg. Do it for Joburg!”
It’s giving “I know I’m toxic for society and so is the DA, but you need us for service delivery!”- which, in my view, is neither a lie nor a truism. I don’t have to like the @Our_DA to perceive their necessary for our municipal politics, but when a voting decision determines whether Sandton and Alex will be separated by a wall, whatever perceived necessity dwindles away, because I care about society.
Or perhaps that statement was intended for a very niche segment of the electorate? One with some deeply vested interests, superior political intelligence and economic stability which enables them to vote for a party and a person that concedes to being “unlikeable”?
What am I missing? Help me out here…
