I think a lot of people still don't fully realize how severe the genocide against Native Americans was.

When celebrity protest was costly and not done for naughty vibes and extra followers. 34 years ago this month, an Irish woman committed an act of defiance on American television that would make her one of the most hated celebrities in the world. She tried to get people to pay attention to children being abused by the very institution that claimed to be their moral guardian. On 3 October 1992, Sinéad O'Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live, one of America's most popular television programmes. She was 25 years old. Two years earlier, Nothing Compares 2 U had made her a global superstar. She had an extraordinary voice, enormous commercial potential and a future that could have made her fabulously wealthy. Every incentive in the entertainment industry told her to keep smiling, singing, looking pretty and making money. Instead, she chose to make people profoundly uncomfortable. She performed Bob Marley's War, completely alone, without instrumental accompaniment, changing the lyrics to explicitly condemn child abuse. At the end, she held up a photograph of Pope John Paul II. And tore it to pieces. "FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY!" Silence. The audience didn't know what to do. Neither did the producers, who had no idea she was planning this. Within days, the machinery of outrage was operating at full capacity. Sinéad had insulted Catholics! She had insulted the Pope! She had insulted religion! How DARE this young woman with a shaved head disrespect something so sacred? Funny how much more offended people could get about a torn photograph than about children being raped and abused by people entrusted with their care. Actor Joe Pesci subsequently appeared on the same programme and declared that, had he been there, he would have given her a smack. The audience laughed and applauded. A grown man threatening to hit a woman for protesting child abuse. Apparently THAT was entertainment. Madonna criticised her. People destroyed her records. Her career suffered enormously. Two weeks later, she appeared at Madison Square Garden for a concert honouring Bob Dylan. Thousands of people had come to celebrate a musician whose reputation rested partly on decades of songs about injustice, rebellion and refusing to submit to authority. And when Sinéad appeared, a substantial part of the audience BOOED her. For having actually rebelled. Kris Kristofferson approached her and told her not to let the bastards get her down. "I'm not down," she replied. And instead of singing the Bob Dylan song she had prepared, she launched into War AGAIN. What happened in the following decades? Investigations revealed extensive sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy and institutional efforts to conceal it. Sinéad wasn't attacking the ordinary believer who found comfort in religion. She was confronting the immense power of an institution whose moral authority had protected perpetrators and helped silence victims.

If you're concerned that a trans teenager might have an unfair advantage in a school sport, wait until you hear about the advantages conferred by having wealthy parents.

You have to be the most morally bankrupt piece of shit on the planet to ever say that a 1 year old baby being shot is justified, but this is how dehumanized Black children are in this country. Their lives don’t matter to these people, and they make that clear every single day.

I think these protests are effective because they expose liberal psychopathy of valuing objects more than human life

Imagine what sort of psyche so many people must have to be far more outraged over a minority party's largely immaterial conference motion than the actual death & destruction dealt out on a daily basis by the State of Israel.

Western ‘civilisation’ has looked at thousands of innocent people and said “Burn them” so many times I have lost count Building are less important than humans — always The failure to realise this is why the West is still not civilised
Someone who looks at this and thinks “Burn it” Doesn’t belong in Western civilisation.

You see, the greatest French writer in history, Victor Hugo wrote an entire novel about how looting to feed yourself and your family is not a crime or personal failing, but a fundamental flaw of a corrupt system that gives you no other choice
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
In Les Misérables Jean Valjean stole one loaf of bread to feed his sister's seven children. Recent Paris looting involved crowds taking cigarettes jewelry luxury goods and consumer items from stores. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Valj… en.wikisource.org/wiki/Les_Mis%C… thelocal.fr/20261018/never…

The real and overwhelmingly disproportionate violence is the violence that cannibalistic capitalism uses to extract profit from the labour, bodies and health of people. The real and overwhelmingly disproportionate vandalism is the vandalism that austerity policies have wrought on the lives and the communities that it siphoned money from to the benefit of the super-rich.
"The bourgeoisie of the whole world, which looks complacently upon the wholesale massacre after the battle, is convulsed by horror at the desecration of brick and mortar!" Karl Marx, 1871

If you're outraged by the destruction of an archaeological building in Limoges, France, but remain silent on the destruction of heritage churches and entire cities in Gaza or archaeological sites and entire villages in Lebanon. Then you're the problem.

Because we live in a completely disgusting and unjust world, half a million Palestinians in Gaza are about to lose monthly food assistance via the WFP due to a lack of funding, which makes Palestinian-run projects like this even more essential. Please please keep donating
Tomorrow, we will once again distribute meals to displaced people in Gaza. The food will reach 150 of the poorest and most vulnerable families. Children deserve to have food to eat, just like children everywhere else in the world. Your donations make a difference. Please, contribute and help us make this possible: chuffed.org/project/172937-d…

An empty building burns down in France and there is non-stop front page news, global outrage, wall to wall coverage, etc. A school full of children are incinerated alive in Gaza and not even a single report about it. This is why the western decline will continue.
