I don’t normally do long winded tweets but I felt we had an interesting discussion in a space earlier with @_dnyw_, @trilz00, @ConnorSACFC + a few others, and I wanted to share it. We were discussing Reece/Gusto and Enzo/Gallagher, who should play against Liverpool and specific regard to the word sharpness and what it means. The consensus was that Gusto and Gallagher were sharper than the aforementioned players, namely due to a) mins played b) time in pre-season camp. One person was adamant that Enzo was sharper than Gallagher based on things such as Enzo’s first touch, ability to scan and play on the half turn. But he was attributing these things (incorrectly) to sharpness, rather than player profile. Another person felt that sharpness is straight defined as fitness. And nothing else. We came to the consensus that there are two scales that directly affect X player’s performance, sharpness and ability. Sharpness can be defined on a scale that is unique to each individual player, and depending on how high on this scale of sharpness X player is, will determine the ability/talent that they can display. Gallagher is sharper than Enzo and arguably looks better in pre-season, because his scale of sharpness is right at the max of where it can be (he’s played the most minutes of any player under Pochettino so far). Once Enzo gets his minutes and reps in, his sharpness will catch up to that of Gallagher’s scale, meaning what he displays is far superior because he is the supremely more talented footballer. Therefore, Reece HAS to start over Gusto IMO. If you’re not in spaces regularly, I recommend you jump in and give your opinion.
