Congratulations to Judy Benjamin—Patient Zero—on completing a 550-mile trek across England, after finishing a 2700-mile walk across the US!! Coming up on 15 years of survival after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and still sharp and healthy at 82!! You are amazing, Judy!!
Dr. Judy Benjamin is expected to finish her approximately 550-mile walk from Land’s End to London tomorrow, September 25, at London’s Lambeth Bridge. Judy has used the journey to advocate for cognitive health. judywalks.com/ #JudyWalkstheWorld #BrainHealth

Today, we’re going to continue talking about Dr. Bredesen’s Subtypes of Alzheimer’s.
Yes, like we established in our last video on this, Alzheimer’s is not just one single disease.
Every neurologist will tell you that no two Alzheimer’s patients that walk through their office present in their symptoms in the same way. Standard of care has largely relegated this to be a phenomenon with no real explanation, deciding to hyperfocus on Amyloid plaques and Tau tangles as the ”cause” for Alzheimer’s symptoms without asking the key question:
Yeah, but: “What is driving the production of Amyloid and Tau, as well as the cognitive downsizing, in the first place?”
Dr. Bredesen found that there were a variety of root cause triggers upstream that were driving the ensuing cognitive decline downstream. And if an effective treatment program were to be created and implemented for the prevention and reversal of the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s, like, say, the ReCODE Protocol, it would be supremely helpful to start profiling specific subgroups of patients in order to personalize therapeutic approaches for greater efficacy.
This is why the first step of the ReCODE Protocol is the Cognoscopy: Dr. Bredesen’s diagnostic framework for screening all the potential contributors and risk factors for cognitive decline. All of these tests and lab results paint a clear picture of where a patient stands and helps identify how they got there. It's the foundation for an individualized protocol to be built out for prevention or reversal.
Over the years, Dr. Bredesen’s team has identified at least 36 contributors to cognitive decline. And most people who have already been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment turn out to have between 10 and 25 contributors to their cognitive decline. Reversing these contributors has proven effective in improving cognition and overall health and function.
By 2017, Dr. Bredesen had found that his patients were falling into about 4 different buckets of slightly different Alzheimer’s. It wasn’t just one blanket diagnosis for everybody that one “silver bullet” drug could cure. Fast forward to today, in 2026, Dr. Bredesen’s team has found this list of subtypes expanding from four to six. On the last couple episodes we talked about Type 1 and Type 2 Alzheimer’s or “Inflammatory” and “Atrophic” Alzheimer’s . Now we’ll get into Type 3.
Type 3 is: Toxic
Okay, what does “toxic” mean?
