We are deeply saddened by the loss of Talib Shakir, a dedicated public servant who was tackling one of the most critical and challenging jobs in government. What a terrible tragedy.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Talib Shakir, Director of the Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen Affairs.
We share our love, condolences, and prayers with Talib’s family and loved ones, the entire MORCA team, and all the members of our community relations teams who loved and learned from Talib.

#WeekWithoutDriving gives you an opportunity to experience the benefits of public transit.
From spending less time in traffic and saving money on gas, parking, and car maintenance to reaping the rewards of a more active lifestyle, you still have time to see for yourself why so many people choose public transit over driving.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Earlier this year, we proposed legislation to enhance protection for victims and to help address troubling trends in domestic violence-related crimes in our city.
But legislation isn't enough. We must all work together to end the cycle of violence and protect survivors.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, there are resources available.

We are resharing this alert because third-party energy companies continue to target DC residents with aggressive sales practices.
Remember:
1️⃣ You're not required to show anyone your energy bill.
2️⃣ Companies claim they will save you money but often end up charging higher rates.

Though I didn’t age out of the system, as a former ward of the state who spent several years in foster care before returning to my family, I am incredibly happy to see this legislation become law! Thanks to all the former foster youth who advocated for this bill. 1/2
16% of youth age out of DC’s foster system without permanent family support — leaving them vulnerable to serious risks.
A group of former foster youth in DC set out to change that.
Their vision just became law with the SOUL Act, legislation passed and funded by the DC Council.
Foster care is not always a good place - I unfortunately know this too well - and it can make life much harder depending on the experience. Youth deserve supportive systems and opps as they age out/exit the system. And I’m glad that in DC, under this law, they will have them. 2/2

Another new Tubman ES appreciation post! We don’t have a lot of public art and sculptures in #ColumbiaHeightsDC, so this is a welcome addition. I think of it as the first of many more to come! Any ideas on where other sculptures or murals should go?
“A New Harriet Tubman Sculpture Has Arrived at the Newly Rebuilt Tubman Elementary School” - This, too, is super cool. Read more about it: popville.com/2026/08/a-new-h…
