‼️NEW ANGLERFISH PAPER! 🐟🎣 So excited to share the final part of my Master’s research! We explore the bizarre tacklebox of anglerfish lures and show how these fishes evolved different ways to attract prey and maybe even mates in the deep sea. #anglerfishes #biology #evolution

Porichthys plectrodon - the Atlantic midshipman. These unusual fishes possess rows of bioluminescent organs called photophores and can produce sounds using specialized muscles attached to their swim bladder.

I’ve been looking at this weirdo quite a bit lately. Monocentris japonica, AKA the pineapplefish, pineconefish, or the knightfish. They possesses amazing armor that allows these fishes to swim around like little tanks. Scan is from Morphosource: UF 159787

How to make the hyoid and its muscles even cooler looking
So excited to share our new paper (open access!) that was worth countless dissections: “Comparative Morphology and Homology of the Hyoid Apparatus and Associated Muscles in Beloniform Fishes (Teleostei: Atherinomorpha)” [Lumbantobing & Parenti 2026] doi.org/10.1002/jmor.70156

Hence why fish are so freaking cool
Truth is fishes do cool things other vertebrates can't do, and they're even sometimes a little pretentious about it

Behold! Two extinct birds: the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) and the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis). Both were wiped out by humans not long after we encountered them. These specimens are housed at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, where they’re used for research.

Prey handling efficiency is at a premium in environments that are energy limited. The deepsea habitats qualify. Following suit, some deepsea predators have evolved impressive teeth that improve prey capture and handling efficiency.

I cannot believe our research on anglerfishes and their infamous lures is featured in National Geographic! I get so excited when I see these weirdos, and I light up when I can share their weirdness with anyone. nationalgeographic.com/anima…

This work wouldn’t be possible without my coauthor @Bathypterois and the support from @stcloudstate and @kunhm at @UnivOfKansas.

I've always loved the look of the "Bigscales." Their heads are unreal in complexity. The "Ragged Bigscale" (Scopelogadus mizolepis) is a deep water species that can be found from 300— 3385m (984—11,105 feet) depth.
