Thank you to the two @Cambridge_Uni medical students who saved my step-brother's life. He was running with girlfriend on Midsummer Common and his heart stopped for 14 minutes. They didn't give up on him, kept him alive til paramedics arrived. He is on the mend and should make a full recovery

The background of how this deal appears to have come about, how discussions with the full Resident Doctors Committee were bypassed, and how pay uplifts are being dubiously calculated makes me think this whole thing stinks of a stitch up The more I read, the less reassured I am

I am a doctor who, due to their frustrations with the NHS and the government's actions, fully believes that further strikes are in my best interests. My DMs are open. Get in touch and send me your favourite memes.

BMA staff have announced strike dates of 27-28 March and 6-7 April, the latter coinciding with the start of the resident doctors’ strike, after the BMA offered its own staff a 2.75% pay rise. That’s lower than the 3.5% recommended for resident doctors, which the BMA itself described as a ‘crushing blow.’ 2.75%, presumably also a crushing blow, per the BMA.

To all those who call us greedy (and worse) for striking or think we are lazy and bad at our jobs, you’re welcome to pay to go private but I’m guessing you don’t want to do that. We are sick of subsidising your free healthcare.

I’ll replace MSRA with a Psychiatry-specific assessment that selects for communication skills, knowledge and aptitude relevant to our specialty. We can have it in place for the August 2027 CT intake.
MSRA has been used as a tool to make recruitment less hassle for recruitment bodies. It’s a blunt, ugly tool that fails to recognise the humanity and skills of highly trained professionals. Bin it off.

So pleased to hear this @ProfRobHoward 👏🏻 Your manifesto covers many things that are big topics for both resident doctors & consultants I speak to. Given ongoing endorsement of the PA role in psych, I am glad to see you explicitly own our responsibility to set scope urgently 🙏🏻
I'm standing for RCPsych President in next March's election. I'm still speaking and listening to friends and colleagues, but you can learn about me and what I would want to do if successful in the election here: profrobhoward.com

Now resident doctors can be paid for ALL the overtime worked without detriment. Many thanks to the negotiations team, especially our UKRDC co-chairs @Melissa_S_Ryan @RossNieuwoudt , TCSN co deputy chairs Keith FD and @CardioShades, and BMA staff involved for making this happen! reddit.com/r/doctorsUK/s/ry7…

The whole system is completely unfit for purpose, and I am angrier than ever even though I personally am securely in a HST programme with CCT approaching in the next few years. 🟡From the catastrophe of rotational training and portfolio-tickbox-assessment as a core concept of 'training' itself... 🔴to the MSRA as a low-effort way of filtering out applications without reference to their aptitude for the specialty... 🔴to the nonsense points-based assessment of applications, scoring largely meaningless criteria such as QI, presentations, publication-mill dross papers that have no bearing on candidate suitability... 🔴to the deeply unserious super-short interviews where we pretend we can select the best candidates from very short and rigidly 'marked' scenarios with no scope to actually delve into the candidate... 🔴to the ludicrous worldwide-open recruitment for non-UKGs and unconstrained mass importation of doctors to cheapen the medical jobs market by over-supply and undermine the collective bargaining power of the medical profession... 🔴to the ridiculous numbers of doctors now being churned out by medical schools, packed into placements like sardines with noticeably reduced curricula and rigour of training & assessment... Now doing 5-year degrees in PassMed cramming... As usual we - by which I mean the Colleges and a whole generation of consultants - have not just accepted this quietly, but have actually facilitated and supported this catastrophe. And here we are, still arguing amongst ourselves still about whether our liberal ideology permits us to 'discriminate' against non-UKGs even as the situation is now literally an existential one of mass unemployment and career devastation for UK-trained medical doctors. Get a grip, medical 'leaders' and Royal Colleges. We - residents and medical students - cannot afford your luxury beliefs and complacency with this system (that has been broken all along) any longer; radical action is needed, not a little tweak in position. Show some leadership for once, because it's not your esteemed careers, livelihoods, and future on the line in your ivory towers. It's your members' and prospective members'. @RCPhysicians @rcpsych @RCSnews @RCSEd @RCoANews @RCPCHtweets @RCollEM @RCPEdin @rcpsglasgow @RCPath @RCRadiologists @RCObsGyn @DoctorsVoteUK @BMAResidents @BMAstudents

It is a scandal that psych-a specialty that is 100% dependent on communication skills does not interview. It's only Psych alongside GP that doesn't interview. We are failing our future psychiatrists/ our patients by relying on MSRA - a multiple choice test which has 6 psych qns

Replying to @Anniedroid_
We started the Choose Psychiatry campaign in 2009 when I was College Dean and we weren’t filling our CT posts. Now, we fill them, but we don’t recruit many great and motivated people who and only 50% who start CT1 move on to ST4. So, nobody should be rejoicing and is much to do.

Yet the Royal College of Psychiatry are speaking like this is a good thing. This is not due to there being SO MANY people who want to do psych. This is the results of a poor recruitment technique!

Psychiatry recruitment team should consider mechanisms to filter candidates who are actually interested in Psychiatry & not just to rely on MSRA.

Study medicine, do your USMLEs and get out of here. Be an attending physician at 28, make your pile, then come back and buy a mansion in the Cotswalds at 45.

Good luck to those receiving A Level results today! If you’ve got fantastic grades, then well done - you deserve to celebrate! If you’ve not got the results you wanted, well then don’t fear because they aren’t everything… I got 5 A Levels and barely make £17 an hour at work. #ALevelResults

If you’re A level results are disappointing, don’t worry. I got straight A*s / As, went to medical school and started on £15/hour.
