Food truck owners did not have a lobbyist or lawyer on retainer. So when Milwaukee tried to put them out of business, they needed an organization like us to step in and have their back. Watch:

@glukianoff's post featuring @NicoPerrino's memo to the staff at @TheFIREorg inspired me to render this cartoon. Any errors are my own.
Keep fighting the good fight! 🫡
🤖 Made with AI
I’ve been trying to explain why @theFIREorg is so concerned about the growing push to regulate social media, AI, and the infrastructure of online speech in the name of safety.
Then @NicoPerrino sent an email to staff that said it better than I ever could.
So I’m sharing it because people outside FIRE deserve to understand the stakes too.
This may be the most important free speech fight since the birth of the internet.

BREAKING: FIRE is suing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, challenging the laws he is using to target lawfully present noncitizens for speech protected by the Constitution.
No administration should be able to deport lawfully present noncitizens for their opinions.

If you can’t question it, it’s not science.
If you can’t debate it, it’s censorship.
If you can’t verify it, it’s a lie.
If you can’t oppose it, it’s tyranny.
If you can’t own it, it’s not property.
If you can’t escape it, it’s enslavement.

This is Kevin Fair. He fell behind on property taxes after leaving his job to care for his dying wife.
In turn, the govt gave an investor the DEED TO HIS HOME—worth far more than his debt.
Kevin is one of many victims of insane govt abuse, which @reason lets me cover. A thread.
No other journalistic institution in the United States covers more individual cases of outrageous injustice at the hand of an overweening state. Help us do more! reason.com/2024/12/08/help-r…

RIP Elmer Kilian, one of my first @IJ clients, who has passed away at 92
Per his obituary: "He also did his neighbors’ taxes for more than 40 years. When the #IRS sought to make him and other tax preparers get a #license, he bravely sued the IRS and won." gibsonfuneral.com/obituary/E…

Fox News exists, talk radio exists, because there was a GIANT GAP IN THE MARKET for news that served not-lefty people something other than lefty-elite views and news. Many such people! The media got leftier and leftier, later infused with the social justice warrior spirit of academia, which led to further drain and removal of right-leaning voices bc those people are icky and the perspective they bring is icky and also facts they bring that we don't want to cover are icky and in the Trump era, unique danger, normalizing, blah, blah.
The bubble got more insulated. It got so insulated that it became totally incurious. Joe Rogan is not a conservative. He was a Bernie supporter. But he is a curious guy and there was a GIANT GAP IN THE MARKET for curious people who felt free to talk about the icky ideas the lefty press had decided should be verboten. Listening to him and Vance NOT self-censor and hedge through a discussion of trans and gender politics the other day was so refreshing.
When Rogan got too successful talking about the icky ideas, the press spent several weeks of nearly 24/7 coverage trying to get him fired bc they don't like when anyone else has the power to elevate issues they think are icky or have debates they say are already settled. They don't like when anyone outside their tribe decides what matters. They see the ability to pick and choose who is marginalized, whose pain and problems matter, and completely disregard the rest as theirs and theirs alone. And it's always a bunch of very rich, powerful people picking, congratulating themselves for being very enlightened, and then telling the normies to shut up and live with their grocery prices or lockdowns or "hateful" concerns with trans politics.
Joe Rogan, and other alternative media (@thefp, @FreeBeacon, Breaking Points, @TheYoungTurks, @rumblevideo) work because they're an actual ALTERNATIVE. Rogan is curious and interesting and chill and not obsessed with policing language or enforcing a viewpoint. He does not communicate, as this panelist does, that merely being young and male is a problem that must be solved with a pipeline to feminism. They say they don't have the infrastructure as they sit on almost every panel of every major news source and all agree with each other after all voting exactly the same way (with notable exceptions who are notable precisely bc there are so few of them).
The condescension, the impugning of character, the gaslighting. It's all there. You can build some more podcasts that do the same thing, I guess. But it won't be alternative because almost everyone will still be saying the same thing. There is no GIANT GAP IN THE MARKET for this because y'all are the market!
Morning Joe had Anand Giridharadas on today and he had a total meltdown about @joerogan, @jordanbpeterson, and other conservative media figures.
Wild stuff from Giridharadas on the conservative "media ecosystem":
"It's not a good one, it's a negative one. It's a it's a radicalization funnel. But what they have done in their online media ecosystem is build a radicalization engine, literally the way militant groups do around the world, that takes people from relatively low level annoyances with the world. Why are eggs so expensive? Why is my kid learning this new thing in American history in school that I didn't learn? And then moves them through YouTube videos, through podcasts, moves them from that annoyance all the way, slowly, slowly, slowly, to a full blown fascist politics. It's an elaborate, multi billion dollar infrastructure, and there is nothing like it on the pro democracy side. When a man is just lost and lonely and not yet radicalized, we don't have the equivalent of Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson to move that man in a feminist direction."

BREAKING: FIRE and @CollegeInsights have just released the 2025 College Free Speech Rankings.
Surveying 58K+ students from 257 institutions, the results find that free speech has been threatened in historic ways since the Israel-Hamas war began.
Expand to learn more ⬇️
🟡 @UVA was ranked as this year’s best school for free speech! Michigan Technological University, Florida State University, Eastern Kentucky University, and Georgia Tech round out the top five.
🔴 @Harvard is ranked as the worst school for free speech for the second year in a row. @Columbia and @nyuniversity round out the bottom three — each earning an “abysmal” rating.
🔴 Campus deplatforming attempts spiked by 400% since Hamas’ October 7th attack on Israel.
🔴 7 out of 10 students are uncomfortable publicly disagreeing with a professor about a controversial political topic.
🔴 54% of students report it’s difficult to talk about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On 17 campuses where this issue was especially contentious, 75% or more marked the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as difficult to discuss.
🔴 1 in 4 students said it was unclear whether their college administration protects free speech.
🔴 1/3 of students approve of the use of violence at least “rarely” to stop campus speakers.
🔴 7 out of 10 students say it's at least “rarely okay” to shout down a speaker.
Given all of this, it is unsurprising that American confidence in higher education is at a record low.

Outrageous: Mayor of @AZSurprise has a resident arrested (in front of her 10-year-old daughter) for criticizing officials. At 2:30, Mayor @skiphall2 warns her from “attacking the city attorney personally” and orders police to remove her. Appalling disregard for First Amendment.
