I am very, *very* proud of this piece. It's an album review, but it's much bigger than that. I would be deeply honored if you gave it a read.

A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus is not only one of the most poignant, riveting, and deeply satisfying chapter books I’ve ever read to my kids.
It’s one of my favorite books. Period.

One thing I always wonder about people who do this is … do they not have friends they can talk to? Like, normally, when your husband hurts your feelings or says something tactless (and he will, because he’s human) you talk privately to a friend who builds you up, and you talk to your husband who will probably apologize and say your hair looks great. Then you move on with your life. A week later nobody even remembers it happened. But these gals apparently have no friends? So they make videos, documenting forever their angst and attitude in that moment. It can never be forgotten or unsaid. There’s no personal context for viewers, and no healing or growth for the woman or her marriage. It’s really not healthy.

My six-year-old has started asking random strangers at the grocery store if they have anyone who checks on them, and it's turned into this whole thing nobody expected.
It started with our elderly neighbor, Mr. Pruitt, who my son noticed always shops alone and takes forever reading labels. One day he just walked up and asked him directly.
Son: "Do you have someone who checks on you?"
Mr. Pruitt: "Not really, buddy."
He came home upset about it and started asking other older shoppers the same question, completely unprompted, in the cereal aisle, by the deli counter, wherever.
Me: "You can't just ask strangers that."
Son: "Why not? It's a normal question."
Most people laughed it off. A few got quiet. One woman started crying near the yogurt and told him her husband had passed that spring and nobody had asked her that in months.
Somehow this spiraled into an actual neighborhood check-in list, organized by three moms from his class, delivering nothing more than a knock on the door and "just seeing how you're doing" once a week to six different elderly neighbors.
Mr. Pruitt now gets visited every Sunday by whichever family has the rotation. He started leaving out lemonade like he's hosting a small event nobody officially invited him to plan.
My son doesn't think any of this is a big deal. He just thinks people should be asked the question more often.
Honestly, I can't argue with him on that one.

I needed my lawn mowed. I asked an American for the name of a company.
He said, "Get a kid."
A kid. Not a service. A child.
I asked which kid.
"Any of 'em."
I asked where one obtains a kid. There is no directory. There is no listing.
He said, "Ask around."
I asked around. Two days later a fourteen year old named Cody was standing on my porch.
He did not bring a mower. Nobody told me this part. The kid uses your mower and your gas. He brings arms.
I asked his rate.
He said, "Whatever."
Whatever. A negotiation had opened and the other party declined to attend.
A blade drawn against no opponent must be returned to the sheath in silence.
I put my wallet away.
So I conducted research. I asked four adults what the correct amount was.
Four numbers. Twenty. Forty. Twenty five. One man said he gave a kid fifty once and could not remember why.
There is no rate. There has never been a rate. An entire national labor market runs with no published price and every participant is somehow satisfied.
I looked up the state minimum wage. I timed the work. I arrived at a defensible figure and I paid it.
My neighbor watched this from his driveway.
Later he came over and told me, kindly, that I had underpaid.
I said the amount exceeded the legal minimum.
He said, "Yeah, but he's a kid."
THE PRICE IS NOT THE PRICE. THE PRICE IS THE PRICE PLUS SOMETHING NO MAN ON THIS STREET WILL SAY OUT LOUD.
So I corrected. I overcorrected. Sixty dollars for forty minutes.
The same neighbor came back over.
"Alright. Don't ruin him."
There is a floor and there is a ceiling. Neither is written anywhere. Both are enforced by men standing in driveways with their arms folded.
The samurai who cannot read the room dies in the room.
I have been dying in this room since June.
Cody was thirsty. I did not offer him water, because he had not asked, and a warrior does not name another warrior's weakness.
My wife told me he is fourteen and it is ninety one degrees. I now leave a bottle on the step where he can take it without being seen taking it.
I asked my neighbor why the whole street does this. Why grown men pay a boy more than the work is worth and then pretend not to have noticed.
He said, "You're not buying a lawn."
Then he went inside, because apparently that was a complete explanation.
Cody has cut my grass eleven times. He is saving for a truck. I know the exact figure because he told me, unprompted, in August, sweating, holding my own mower.
Last week a family moved in three houses down. The man came over and asked if I knew anybody who cuts grass.
I said, "I got a kid."
I heard what that sounded like. I did not correct it.
He is nine hundred dollars from the truck.
A mountain is not asked to be smaller. A mountain is walked around, at night, quietly, by a man with a truck payment he intends to make on someone else's behalf.
I have started mentioning him to people.

This reminds me:
Back when I was in college, I went to a friend of mine’s art show. I wore a very cute red polka dot dress that happened to be strapless.
There was a dude there (let’s call him Drew) that I was acquainted with from any time I stopped by one of our College’s Christian ministries or whatever - who we had casually gone over to chat with, along with some of his buddies.
Strapless dresses are very annoying, by the way. I was a little uncomfy in the one I was wearing, and I’m kind of a fidgety person in general, so every now and then I would tug at the top of it to make sure it wasn’t sliding down or whatever.
After a while, Drew stopped talking and looked at me and very bossily told me to stop messing with my dress. He said it as though he really believed he had some type of authority that ought to be obeyed. I don’t even remember how I reacted, because I was so confused by this behavior. Why on earth did this dude think he even had a vote regarding how I handled my own attire?? I for sure didn’t stop messing with my dress though, because why would I 😂😂.
Anyway, many years later, I ran that story by my hubs to see if he had any insight for me about it and he said, “oh. That’s because Drew had a crush on you for sure, and guys like that think having a crush on you means they have staked some kind of claim on you.”
I was like “EW HE THOUGHT HE HAD SOME TYPE OF OWNERSHIP OVER ME?!”
In hindsight, I could see it but cannot begin to express how asinine it was for any random dude to think that.
No one has ownership over me, period. This is true for all women. We belong to God and ourselves. And that’s IT.
I am my husband’s wife and we honor our sacred vows and even THAT does not mean I’m not my own, whole person.
It’s insane for any adult to think they can tell another adult how to dress. Bonkers crazy.

The new #Stargate series was designed to welcome new viewers, respect canon, and satisfy longtime fans.
As others (including @BaronDestructo) have pointed out, many of the reasons being floated for its cancellation simply don't hold up.
Save it... or release it.
