During a recent visit with Andy Allen MLA and Dr Steve Aiken OBE MLA, Party Leader Jon Burrows MLA learned how Belfast Harbour is continuing to set the pace for what leadership and vision look like in Northern Ireland.
Belfast Harbour stands today as a jewel in Northern Ireland's crown, a powerhouse of innovation, ambition and economic leadership that continues to shape the future of the region. With a legacy built on vision, the Commissioners are embarking on one of the most transformative investment programmes ever seen here, a bold £1.3 billion plan designed to propel Belfast Harbour into a new era of growth and global competitiveness.
Jon Burrows MLA said:
“This unprecedented investment programme underscores Belfast Harbour Commissioners' reputation for leadership and forward thinking strategy. Their courage to invest at scale, their determination to innovate, and their unwavering belief in Northern Ireland's potential mark them as one of the region's most important institutions.
“At the heart of this ambition lies a thriving commercial ecosystem. Over 760 businesses now call Belfast Harbour home, forming one of the most dynamic and diverse business communities anywhere on the island. From global logistics to cutting-edge tech, screen industries to advanced manufacturing, the Harbour has become a magnet for enterprise and a driver of prosperity for Northern Ireland.
“Looking ahead, the Commissioners' plans are nothing short of transformative. Their long-term development strategy includes the creation of 3,500 new homes, forming vibrant, sustainable neighbourhoods that will reshape Belfast's waterfront and provide new opportunities for families, workers and communities. This vision reflects a commitment not only to economic growth but to social impact, ensuring the Harbour's success is shared widely across the region.
“Their long standing commitment to reinvest 1% of their annual operating profit into supporting local communities is commendable. I would like to thank Harbour Chair Dr Theresa Donaldson, Harbour CEO Joe O'Neill and their staff for their outstanding commitment. It is clear that Belfast Harbour Commissioners are not simply planning for the future; they are building it.”

Linfield FC was shocked and extremely disappointed yesterday to see that a local political party had used the Club’s badge in a political message linked to “abusive flags”.
The Club engaged at an early stage with representatives of the party responsible and secured the deletion of the offending post. A rather conditional apology from their South Belfast MLA has since followed.
With all due respect, and in particular context of previous issues between this Club and other elected representatives of this party, it is difficult to see any other reasonable interpretation of the use of a Linfield FC flag as the sole imagery accompanying an article referring specifically to “abusive flags”.
We did feel that the matter had been brought under some control yesterday evening, however, until an inappropriate and undignified late night intervention from that party’s leader.
Linfield FC now awaits full and unconditional apologies from the Alliance Party and the individuals in question.

Today’s meeting of the All-Party Group on #FuelPoverty, Chaired by Andy Allen MBE MLA and organised by Secretariat NEA NI, brought representatives from @CommunitiesNI to provide an update on the Heating Oil Support Scheme, which is planned to be introduced in September 2026.
Thank you to the speakers for their contributions and all attendees, including MLAs @AndyAllen88, @RobbieButlerMLA and @Kelmba.
I recognise and respect the right to peaceful and lawful protest. While people are understandably concerned and angry, there can be no justification for criminality, disorder or the destruction of property.
Violence and destruction are not the answer. It is wrong, diverts much-needed resources, creates fear and uncertainty, and leaves local communities to deal with the consequences.
Those responsible should stop immediately.

Last night’s attack in North Belfast was barbaric, and people are understandably concerned and angry. I fully acknowledge these legitimate concerns and defend the right to peaceful protest, but the subsequent violence and destruction of property is completely unacceptable.
Wholeheartedly agree with Mark. I have been consistently clear that, if we are serious about turning the curve on the housing crisis, we need to create the conditions to build at least 5,000 social homes per year.
At the most recent Communities Question Time, I raised directly with the Minister that while funding pressures are repeatedly referenced, the Executive’s Housing Supply Strategy risks losing credibility if the funding required to deliver its ambition is not provided.
The need is there, as consistently highlighted by the housing figures. What is now required is the political will and long-term investment to match the scale of the challenge.

📈It comes as stark new figures reveal the number of households on the social housing waiting list in Northern Ireland has now passed the 50,000 mark.
The Executive has a programme for government target of starting work on almost 6,000 new social homes by 2027.

“Fuel poverty remains at crisis level in Northern Ireland, with far too many households struggling to afford to keep warm. Improving the energy efficiency of our homes is a lasting solution to reduce household energy bills and improve health and wellbeing. We welcome this consultation as an important step towards a new energy efficiency scheme for low-income and vulnerable households and urge everyone to have their say in shaping a scheme that is so evidently needed.” – Pat Austin, Director of NEA NI and Chair of the @fuelpovertyni.

Stewart welcomes Belfast Harbour expansion plans but warns barriers must be removed
Ulster Unionist infrastructure spokesperson John Stewart MLA has welcomed Belfast Harbour's £1.3 billion Horizons masterplan as a major vote of confidence in the Northern Ireland economy, but warned that long-standing barriers around planning and land classification continue to hold the port back from realising its full potential.
Commenting on the announcement, John Stewart MLA said:
"Belfast Harbour's £1.3 billion Horizons masterplan is a major vote of confidence in the Northern Ireland economy. With the potential to support 5,500 construction jobs and generate an estimated £12 billion for the wider economy, it is exactly the kind of long-term, strategic investment our region needs from a port that already handles 70% of our seaborne trade.
"However, real barriers remain. The planning system continues to be a significant drag on infrastructure delivery, and the ONS classification of our Trust Ports as public corporations restricts their ability to borrow prudently to fund the very projects this masterplan depends on. Scotland resolved this issue a decade ago. Northern Ireland cannot afford to keep falling behind.
“I have challenged the Department many times in recent months on the continued delays to the Ports Bill, and I am pleased that it is finally now making its way to the Executive in early June and is expected to reach the Assembly just before summer recess. That timeline must be held to, so Belfast Harbour and the wider trust port network can get on with growing our economy."

For many families, fuel poverty is a daily pressure and people are right to be worried and frustrated. But politicians twisting facts or fuelling misinformation for clicks and shares only adds to fear and confusion for those already struggling.
People deserve honesty, facts and solutions. 🤝🔥

Summer Scheme Update!
Glad to see that after communicating with the Health and Ministers yesterday, they have found a solution. Ongoing work must now take place to future proof the provision and ensure that everyone receives equitable access and that schools are adequately supported.

Deeply concerned by news that summer schemes at Special Schools have been cancelled.
Ongoing uncertainty around annual funding, and continued late notice to parents on September placements for children with SEN, expose a clear gap in fairness.
I’ll be raising this urgently with the Education & Health Ministers we need a sustainable, ethical solution.
