ALT For ten years, Witch Beam has created award-winning games for PC and consoles with the Unity game engine. Unity Technology have announced a plan to charge developers each time their game is “installed”, which would create an unpredictable cost and be unfeasible to implement. Unity knows that in many cases they have no way to know how many times a game is installed but insists it will calculate a number anyway with a method they won't divulge. That makes this new fee model invasive, error-prone, and in addition to the subscription fees developers pay to make their games in Unity. This change isn’t part of an upcoming Unity release, they will apply it retroactively to all games made with Unity, even ones released prior to their announcement. Small developers always have to consider implications of licencing terms carefully, but Unity has shown it is willing to try and change their rules after the fact. This is an unreconcilable violation of trust.
