Lots of community interest in distinguishing oscillations from 1/f these days. We address this in our new chapter preprint "How can we differentiate narrow-band oscillations from aperiodic activity?". Was fun working and thinking about this with @Tomdonoghue .
📜 New preprint!
With @AndrewJWatrous, we posted our chapter of an upcoming textbook, which is a mini-review of differentiating narrowband oscillations from broadband aperiodic (1/f) in neural time series:

Excited to share our lab's recent paper showing that direct electrical stimulation of the human amygdala enhances recognition memory for objects but not scenes. The article is open-access, and we'd love to hear your thoughts! Please share!

Human neurons don’t just lock to the phase of brain waves, some also fire at specific frequencies, mostly below 10 Hz. Frequency & phase tuning were largely distinct, hinting at a previously unknown coding mechanism which has implications for frequency targeted DBS. Thread:
ORCA enabled us to ask how neuronal firing covaries with phase and frequency. Some neurons fired more when particular LFP frequencies were present. Future studies can look to see whether frequency-tuned firing covaries with behavior or with frequency gradients in traveling waves.

Human neurons phase lock to slow oscillations. Our new preprint led by @ZahraJourahmad identifies neurons tuned to the frequency of oscillations (akin to resonance), a possible information coding channel beyond rate/phase coding and a novel neuromodulation target @BCMNeurosurgery

🚨 New lab paper!🚨
Dream study of mine for 20 yrs not possible until now thanks to NIH 🧠 funding & 1st-author lead @m_seeber
We tracked hippocampal activity as people walked memory-guided paths & imagined them again. Did brain patterns reappear?🧵👇

Our paper on suppression of onset responses during speech production in auditory cortex (and lack thereof in the insula!) is now out in @SfNJournals ! Onset responses may provide an important cue for externally generated sounds! Thread below with info. jneurosci.org/content/early/…
New @biorxivpreprint from my lab is out! We (grad student Kurteff et al) use intracranial sEEG to show selective suppression of auditory onset responses during speaking, with a unique role of the posterior insula in auditory feedback monitoring biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Great work Kat!
I’m excited to share our new paper in @brainstimj! We used natural human conversations to investigate the brain activity underlying emotional expression: brainstimjrnl.com/article/S1… 1/6
Come hear about our efforts to track human single units over days with 24h recordings, tomorrow afternoon at SFN @ZahraJourahmad
