My latest story for @AGU_Eos, about a toxic metal in the Baltic Sea and why it matters in planning for clean-up of dead zones.
.@UUtah geologist Chad Ostrander, while at @WHOI, discovered more thallium than expected in the Baltic Sea. Comment from Tim Lyons @UCRiverside, story by @AmyHMayer.

In my latest for @AGU_Eos, I wrote about a new tool in the kit for managers monitoring snowpack with an eye toward water availability. Love to see graduate students publishing their work and talking with me about it!
Many Western states rely on snowpack. A new metric from @mtnAragon @EngineeringOSU will help calculate how much water the snow is storing as climate change reduces precip and increases temperatures. Comments from Xubin Zeng @uarizona. Story by @AmyHMayer. eos.org/articles/changing-sn…
Because witnessing a total #Eclipse isn’t enough science excitement for one week, I also wrote about #Antarctic for @AGU_Eos and it came out today!
#Antarctic polynya size fluctuates on a 16-year cycle in the Ross Sea.
New research from @ariaanpurich @MonashUni + colleagues from @otago; comments from Kent Moore @UofT Mississauga; story by @amyhmayer.

Amazing training today in San Antonio.
This collaborative training and mentoring program offered by @RealSciLine and @Open_Notebook is available at no cost to participants, thanks to generous support from @SimonsFdn #InThePathOfTotality. #Eclipse2024 #ScienceJournalism #ReportingTheEclipse
During Roman disease outbreaks, the climate was cooler and dryer than usual. New #paleoclimate work from the Gulf of Taranto has a 3yr resolution model. I wrote about it for @AGU_Eos

Oh happy day: @usda_nass has released 2022 census of ag data! Now we can stop saying the ave age of #farmers is 57 as of 2017. Because it's 58 as of 2022. Other hot takes: nationally, 9% of farmers are under age 35; 36% are female. #agriculture #AgTwitter
A Salinas Valley nonprofit helps farmworkers become farm owners. And the incubator model is bringing more people into farming at a time when they're definitely needed. #AgTwitter #Farmers A piece for @CivilEats civileats.com/2024/01/18/thi…
My latest piece for @CivilEats looks at a Farmworker-to-farm owner program’s success.
California’s farmworkers face untold barriers accessing the land, capital, and training needed to strike out on their own. For 20 years, ALBA has been slowly changing the landscape for this important group of aspiring growers.

Happy to see a project I worked on for most of 2023 come out today with @FERNnews and @npratc (audio aired 12/26/2023, but npr.org has the story today). thefern.org/2024/01/can-3-bi… #HBCU #agtwitter #Climate

Another piece for @CivilEats; this one about concerns related to nocturnal fruit #harvest. Across #agriculture the need for safety regs is great.
Farmworkers are at high risk from scorching daytime temperatures. Harvesting at night can help to keep them cool, but poses different safety and well-being risks.

Hey #AgTwitter I'll be in SW Ohio Mon-Tue; would love to visit a fruit/veg farm in Xenia/Wilberforce area. Or #urban farm near C-bus. Anyone?
OMG the OG @stockcropper is in the Food, Inc. sequel. Congrats, Zack!

Really enjoyed talking #farmbill with @CelesteHeadlee for @CivilEats .
Host @CelesteHeadlee wants the public to understand how decades-old subsidies for sugar companies benefit billionaires at the expense of the environment, farmworkers, and the nutrition of the nation. @AmyHMayer spoke to her about her podcast Big Sugar.
