THE BONOBO THAT LEFT THE FOREST… WAS IT AN ANCESTOR RETURNING HOME?
Deep in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, something extraordinary happened.
A bonobo appeared in the village of Yombachu, in the Likonda Groupement.
According to local witnesses, when confronted by a hunter, the animal made a gesture that some villagers interpreted as a plea for mercy.
But the story doesn't end there.
In communities where ancient traditions connect humans to the forest, some believe that great apes are more than just animals.
Was this simply an unusual wildlife encounter, or was there something deeper behind the villagers' interpretation?
Conserv Congo travelled to the community to hear the story directly from those who witnessed it.
Watch the story. Listen to the witnesses. Decide what you think.
What do you believe happened? Can ancestral beliefs help protect endangered wildlife?

Conservation starts with people.
In the Congo Basin, forests are often exploited not because communities don't care, but because poverty leaves few alternatives. Invest in food security, livelihoods and education, and communities become the strongest guardians of nature.
Conservation is not charity. It's an investment.

Conservation is not charity. It should be an investment into people to protect wildlife and to preserve the planet! Conserv Congo is implementing a 4-site Green Network Programme in Tshuapa Province (DRC), linking food security, community livelihoods, and forest conservation across the Congo Basin landscape
Charcoal production + illegal wildlife hunting are now the 2 biggest pressures on Congo forests.
Same root causes: poverty, weak governance, lack of alternatives.
No enforcement-only solution will work. We need livelihoods, energy alternatives & community-led conservation. @ConservC @oakfnd @Connected_Cons @EOWBF @CBI_UCLA
Every other species gathers, hunts, grazes, or grows its food directly from nature. Humans are the only species that pays to eat. Gardening is not work; it is a return to our original relationship with life @ConservC

Two suspected traffickers arrested in Kindu, Maniema, with 131 kg of elephant ivory seized—representing several elephants killed. One suspect is a lawyer registered at the local bar.
The operation was led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office with the @PNC and @IccnRdc supported by intelligence from @ConservC .
This case is linked to a wider trafficking network operating between Kindu, Kisangani, and Kinshasa, where nearly 1 ton of pangolin scales was seized weeks ago.
