A 2-year-old girl was thrown from a pickup truck during a crash on a bridge and landed in the cold water 25 feet below. At first she was floating on her back, but within seconds she rolled over and was face down in the bay. Jonathan Bauer was driving across the bridge with his daughter when he saw the crash and heard people screaming. He ran to the edge, saw the little girl below, took off his shoes and jumped roughly 25 feet into the water. Jonathan landed about 15 feet away, swam to her and pulled her onto his shoulder. She wasn’t responding, so he firmly tapped her back until she coughed up water and opened her eyes. A nearby pontoon boat helped get them to shore, and the little girl was airlifted to the hospital. She was released the next day, doing well. Jonathan didn’t know that child. He just saw a 2-year-old floating face down below a bridge and jumped in after her. When Renita Smith realized her school bus was on fire in College Park, Maryland, she immediately switched into what she called “mommy mode.” The bus was carrying 20 elementary school children between the ages of 4 and 10, and flames were already spreading as she began getting them off one by one. Renita got every child to safety, then did something even more incredible: she ran back onto the burning bus to check every seat and make absolutely sure nobody had been left behind. By the time she reached the final step, the bus was being swallowed by smoke and flames, but all 20 children were safe and none were injured. Renita later brushed off the praise and said the children were “my babies” until she returned them to their parents. That instinct helped save 20 young lives.
