The desert uniform of Desert Storm was built to look like rock and shadow, not open sand. Six-Color Desert, worn on the Desert Battle Dress Uniform, used a sand base with brown, pale green, and the black and white spots that earned it the name chocolate chip. The Army issued it in 1981 as the arid counterpart to M81 Woodland. It was designed for rocky desert ground and became the image of U.S. ground forces in the Persian Gulf War of 1990 and 1991. The print was distinctive and remains widely recognized. In much of the open desert it performed poorly because the dark spots did not match the terrain. Three-Color Desert replaced it in the early 1990s. The pattern is retired from general issue.
