Join me on the latest episode of @TheFlipAfrica podcast, where I discussed @AlitheiaIDF's experience investing in women and the untapped economic potential of gender lens investing alongside co-hosts @just_norm and @ElohoGM: theflip.africa/podcast/inves…
Investing in women is an economic imperative. That's what Alitheia Capital's Tokunboh Ishmael (@tolushola) says. Tokunboh is the Managing Partner of @thealitheia, a $100 million gender-lens private equity fund. And they're investing with a gender lens because it makes economic sense to do so... 💰 The purchasing power of women across the globe is over $15 trillion. 🙋🏿‍♀️ Over 50% of businesses in Africa are owned by women, yet less than 5% of funding goes to women 💁🏾‍♀️ If over 50% of the population is not fully involved in the economy, how can the African continent reach its full potential? And to close the gender funding gap requires both gender-lens investors as well as more traditional investors... Andreata Muforo (@AMuforo) is a Partner of the venture capital fund @TLcomCapital. Of its five partners, 60% are women. Andreata says it gives them a competitive advantage to see and go after untapped opportunities. This episode of @TheFlipAfrica is the third in five-episode of our series on gender-lens investing, co-hosted by @ElohoGM, Founding Partner at @FirstCheckHQ. In this episode, we're joined by the investors - Tokunboh & Andreata - to talk about why they're investing with a gender lens, and what happens when they do. And stay tuned for the end of the episode, for a retrospective conversation between @ElohoGM & @just_norm. -- Watch the full episode here on X. Or, hit the link in the post below to watch on YouTube or listen with your favorite podcast app ⬇️ -- This series is created under the ScaleX project: Co-designing Solutions to close the early stage gender-financing gap in Africa, an initiative of Make-IT in Africa. @giz_gmbh implements this project on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Under @aishapandor's leadership, @SweepSouthSA impacted 50,000+ women, executed millions of bookings, and closed a US$13M investment round led by @AlitheiaIDF in 2022. Congratulations to Aisha and to the new leadership team led by CEO, Lourandi Kriel, on this next chapter.
Some exciting news! Thrilled to be welcoming Lourandi Kriel as @SweepSouthSA’s new CEO, effective 29 Jan 2024. Growing SweepSouth over the last 9 years to serve over 2 million bookings and positively impact over 50,000 African women and their families and communities, has been a huge honor and something of which I’m incredibly proud. So excited and optimistic about this new phase of growth. I’ll continue to support SweepSouth as an executive director, while current SweepSouth MD Luke Kannemeyer moves into an expanded COO role. Grateful to everyone who has supported us on this journey! ♥️ More details on our blog. blog.sweepsouth.com/exciting…

We invested in @JetstreamAfrica, via our gender lens fund, @AlitheiaIDF, on the data-informed evidence that the company and its leadership have the capacity to enable richer inter-continental trade and to unleash Africa's full potential.
When @JetstreamAfrica started operations in 2019, the hypothesis was that by grouping cargo together, they could reduce the export costs for small exporters. The team has since found out that exporters could not afford marginally cheaper export costs and were losing business as a result. Banks would not finance them because African bankers are not in the business of giving risky export loans without over-collateralization. So Miishe decided to add this to her business. In addition to freight forwarding, her team now writes up to $100k cheques to help small exporters fulfill international orders. If any startup business deserves support, it's Jetstream. I wrote about their hopes for growth here. techcabal.com/2023/11/21/jet…
