CheA histidine kinase, the "brain" of bacterial chemosensory systems, is a five-domain protein, as seen in E. coli and B. subtilis.
Well, more often than not, this is not true!

How does a pathogenic bacterium search for food? @BriegelAriane and @AliseMuok studied the Treponema denticola, a bacterium that lives in dental plaque 🦷 Their results could have direct medical implications to treat diseases such as Lyme and syphilis edu.nl/b783g
Having this work published is a symbol of perseverance. From getting married, taking a leave for health, and moving to a different country, this work was there the whole way through! Thank you @BriegelAriane @CKeithCassidy @flory_olsthoorn @ortega_science journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…

Suicidal chemotaxis in bacteria!
Now officially published!
We found that Pseudomonas aeruginosa crawls towards lethal antibiotcs.
This was a super cool project to work on and I'm stoked to see it out!

Happy to share my newest preprint on spirochete chemosensing! Did you know that an alternative chemotaxis protein also alters biofilm and persister formation? Well you can read more about it here! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

You might already know "fungal highway" for motile soil bacteria ( pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/es0… ), but how about phages? Can they also be co-transported (or hitchhike, as suggested by @AliseMuok @BriegelAriane doi.org/10.1016/j.tim.2020.1… ) on the fungal highway? (2/8)

I am so excited to finally share "I'm a Neutrino"! Featuring modern physics experiments beautifully illustrated by my mother, Ilze Lemesis. She inspired me to pursue my #STEM dreams growing up, now I aspire to encourage kids to do the same. Cute neutrino story time, here we come!
Before you finish reading this sentence, trillions of neutrinos will have passed through your body. I'M A NEUTRINO by @EveVavagiakis and Ilze Lemesis uses rhyming text and watercolor art to explain these tiny particles to small readers! Coming spring 2022.
Thank you @markowenmartin for the wonderful knitted moss piglet! He's so happy with his E. coli and B. burgdorferi friends

So deeply thankful for the privilege of having a home lab. Without it, given my spinal injury + no formal degree of any kind, I would not be able to work and pay bills. Big huge shout-out to all who hired my services and continue to support my efforts. My little CRO saved me.

In high school biology, I was paired up with a boy and told to draw what we thought our baby would look like, and that’s the only genetics lesson I ever had until college. Scientists are rare in rural USA and it can cause a divide.
