What has happened to the WSJ?
I’ve subscribed for years.
But the financial information is largely gone - and a concentration on markets, investing and economics has given way to Politico style blogging.
The Bureau Chief is a former Washington Post lefty who has hired former Politico and Huffington Post activists to cover economics.
It’s not working.
They have reporters now who don’t understand finance.
You open the app in the morning and all you see is political commentary and partisan attacks.
It’s become a paid Politico style publication and everyone knows it.
It’s fallen - and needs to go back to its roots of economic reporting. There are too many left wing political commentary outlets already.

Woke 1 is misnamed. The 2020 period of exuberance should be considered woke 2.
Woke 1 (2010 to 2018): Sex and gender issues. Gay marriage gets legalised, slut shaming and man spreading are big preoccupations, starts out among weird and annoying undergrads and mainstreams, culminates in MeToo and pussy hats.
Woke 2 (2018 to 2024): Race and Trans. BLM and trans women in sports are the big arguments. It starts out popular but over extends and finishes with Trump’s winning the election.
Woke 3 (2024 to …): Palestine and economics. Obviously we’re still in it but Mamdani will probably be remembered as a big moment in this era.

I refuse to change how I write because skinny nerds in Sin Francisco made a demon app that mimics human writing. I like em dashes. I’m not going to not use em dashes on account of the demon app. Otherwise, style becomes an ongoing exercising of doing whatever the demon app isn’t.

It took 9 years for SFFA to go from complaint to winning. Enforcement will take less, but still will require the supreme court to overrule defiant appellate courts.
Ergo nothing will ever change because dems will win in 2028 and this needed to be a day 1 enforcement issue
Another funny thing about “banned books” lists is how they used to all include Harry Potter (‘90s Evangelical moms afraid of witchcraft) but now rarely do, which tells you something about the politics of the listmakers and their willingness to go along with cancellation campaigns

The Times had this. They chose to bury it 30 paragraphs deep under a novel about Lyndsey‘s professional background.
Jeff F retweeted
The politico story confirms that the NYT writers had the details of the sexual assault but chose to omit them and instead focus their article overwhelmingly on the claims from LF so that they can just be spun as a partisan attack.
Would be interested to see the communication between the Platner camp and NYT before the article was published.
It is rather obvious that NYT story was more of a cover up for Platner than an attempt to reveal the truth.
They essentially made the women in the story targets by intentionally withholding so much. I hope other women seriously take note to never trust the reporters or editors involved again. But it doesn’t really matter because the rest will eventually come out.
That’s what makes it amazing that so many continue to dig deeper and double down on defending this guy.
It also says a lot about the people who are spending all of their time tried to find dirt on Lyndsey and others around her just to cover up for such a person.

This is a reminder that NYC has banned gas stoves and boilers in new construction, all while the electric grid can’t handle a hot day.
This has caused the drastic increase in energy bills, and all we get is hot summer days with the AC set to 78’.
New York: it's hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool.
Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you're not using, and unplug what you can.
Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings, dimming/turning off our lights during peak electricity demand, asking private partners to do the same, and powering down non-essential equipment.
A stable grid means the AC stays on, and lives are saved. Let's ease demand — and get through the heat — together.

Andrew Carnegie donated $2B (in current dollars) to build 2,500 libraries. Most of these beautiful buildings still stand today, over a century later, anchoring downtowns across America.
MacKenzie Scott, on the other hand, incinerated $26B on woke NGOs with nothing to show for it. Nothing she has funded will endure a year from now, let alone 100.
It would be tragic, if it weren’t so disgustingly wasteful.
Jeff Bezos' ex-wife MacKenzie Scott has given over $26,300,000,000 to charity, making her one of the biggest individual donors in history.
She wants to spend the majority of her Bezos fortune on helping others and making the world a better place.

Dem Senators interviewing Graham Platner yesterday
WSJ reports from inside the senators meeting with Platner. Some interesting details where his biggest backers pressed him if any additional allegations were coming.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders asked Platner if any additional allegations would emerge against the embattled Democratic candidate, according to people familiar with the discussion. Platner said there weren’t any.
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who also attended the meeting, followed up and said there is a big difference between marital issues and allegations of sexual assault, the people said. Platner agreed and denied any credible allegations of assault were forthcoming.

The reason you can't cast Snape as black is that Snape is an uncool sniveling little dork and no one is going to buy that an attractive black guy is an uncool sniveling dork
This shot looks good—but all that attention to detail risks going down the drain with Essiedu as Snape.
Severus Snape, as written in the original books, is unmistakable: a gaunt, sallow-skinned man with a marble white face, skin the colour of sour milk, a hooked nose, greasy shoulder-length black hair, and cold, penetrating black eyes that give him a perpetually bat-like, shadowy presence. His very appearance is meant to evoke unease—someone who seems to glide rather than walk, wrapped in billowing black robes, embodying bitterness, austerity, and an almost gothic severity.
Snape isn’t just any character—his physicality is deeply tied to his personality and narrative weight. He is described as pallid, withdrawn, and emotionally guarded, with a sharp, intimidating demeanor that reflects years of inner conflict, resentment, and secrecy. Every detail, from his hooked nose to his curt expressions, contributes to the way students fear him and the way readers perceive him as morally ambiguous.
@HBO @wbd @StreamOnMax @jk_rowling @Caseybloys — if Essiedu is indeed part of the show, hopefully you’ve taken fans’ concerns seriously and considered placing him in a different role. Snape is too iconic, too precisely described, and too central to reinterpret without losing something fundamental.
Fans aren’t asking for perfection—we’re asking for fidelity to the character as written. Please #recastsnape with an actor who more accurately reflects the original depiction from the #HarryPotter books.

Analysis on the Illinois congressional district MeToo accusations:
*Everyone on Bluesky sympathizes with Megan Wachspress, the 42-year-old accuser, who is a lecturer at Stanford Law School. They call her brave for coming forward and talking about how she was harmed.
*Everyone on X is exasperated by what they see as MeToo over-reach and sympathizes with Daniel Biss, the 48-year-old mayor of Evanston, Illinois, and a leading candidate in today's congressional primary in the Chicago area.
Wachspress wrote on Bluesky and in a Substack that when she was a 20-year-old junior at U. of Chicago, Biss was her professor in a math course. He was then an assistant professor a the university and was 26. He was very friendly to her during office hours and then, after the term ended, sough a romantic course of action with Wachspress. The two dated for a little while and did some making out, she asserts. But then each of them decided this wasn't appropriate and they cut it off. Biss' campaign has since confirmed this account.
Neither has reported that there was any sex between them.
Wachspress says she found this, among other elements of what she described as demeaning sexism, so demoralizing that despite her mathematical prowess, she pursued a different field in her graduate studies.
