Mohsen Zakeri, 1954-2024. A great philologist and a generous colleague, perhaps the first scholar to seriously investigate the premodern Persian-Arabic literary-historical interface in a series of fundamental articles on translation, aphorisms, and history uni-goettingen.academia.edu/…
"The translation itself was magisterially prepared by Anna Bailey Galietti, translator extraordinaire. Anna was an ideal choice as a formidable Francophile and a fellow scholar of early Islam."

The Déroche reference is in the Tehran article.
One could guess that this passage in Ibn Abi Usaybi'a might have been the impetus for the - otherwise idiosyncratic? - choice of thick paper and big thick letters??
Thank you @LoehrNadine! The authors of the Tehran study are confident on the radiocarbon dating to 1526-1796 CE, and Déroche agreed with Daneshpazuh and Badawi that this ms looked fake - so presumably the forgers must have been familiar with this passage from Ibn Abi Usaybi'a ?!

See the notes on figs. 5a and 5b in the article? I don't think I've ever seen كتب used for authorship like that? Then again, I've never seen an adab/falsafa work written in that script... for good reason!
Radiocarbon dating confirms fake "Hunayn b. Ishaq" signature at the University of Tehran. So ... not just @Stanford ☺️

The Witkam note on Ethiopic palimpsest Quran forgeries is here fdr.uni-hamburg.de/record/62… with thanks to @CellardEleonore for the reference. I should stress that this purchase happened before @AnnaBigelow786 and I arrived @Stanford and before @bla222 took on Special Collections 🤪🤪
and poems: lyrics-of-ascent.net/portfol…. I attempted to stress along the same lines as your tweet that Hallaj didn't call himself a Neoplatonist: drive.google.com/file/d/1_Gl…. Is this all secularization? Hopefully not? Or not in an incompatible way?
It can be quite a useful label - so long as one remembers it is exactly "a very recent Western practice" as you say. There is a great recent collection of articles: global.oup.com/academic/prod…

Standing on the shoulders of giants😳 - most notably Mohsen Zakeri's articles on the same subject (uni-goettingen.academia.edu/…) and see also Lara Harb's JAOS article on macaronics....

The Shidyaq translation will last for centuries. Unsurpassable!
Beautiful tribute to Humphrey by @nanaasfour.
“To date, I have been fortunate enough to be able to consult almost all the living authors whose works I have translated,” he said, adding, “I have questions for the dead, too, when I meet them.”
