The single most important thing I have learned about software development over my career is that if you do not aggressively fight complexity, it will eat you alive.

34,000 Powerwalls across California will be activated today to support the grid during the current heatwave - sign up via Tesla app
@CalEnergy @PGE4Me @SCE @SDGE
It's getting warm in southern California and that means air conditioning putting the hurt on the @sce grid.
Thankfully, @teslaenergy's Virtual Powerplant has been called into action for an event tomorrow. Game on!
I'm also getting a @Tesla software update for the MYP. 🤘😎

In the first half of 2024 alone, Tesla deployed 13.45 GWh of battery storage. This almost equals the company's total battery storage deployments for the entire year of 2023, which were 14.72 GWh. 2024 is turning out to be a much bigger year for Tesla Energy than most thought.
So far this year, Tesla's battery storage deployments are equivalent to the amount of battery capacity used in about 179,000 Model Ys.

We also deployed 9.4 GWh of energy storage products in Q2 – the highest quarterly deployment yet
In Q2, we produced approximately 411k vehicles & delivered approximately 444k vehicles.
Our Q2 Earnings Call will be streamed live on X on July 23 at 4:30pm CT

Shoutout to whoever had the optimism to add this gem to the #Java docs for nanoTime()
> Differences in successive calls that span greater than approximately 292 years (263 nanoseconds) will not correctly compute elapsed time due to numerical overflow.

TIL rsync -av does not include dot files and dot directories by default. You have to add --include=".*"
Some fun recent progress on my off-and-on hobby project @elastiknn:
- Caught up to the latest versions of Elasticsearch w/ help from @fabriziofortino
- Removed a deprecated dependency on sun.misc.Unsafe github.com/alexklibisz/elast… (based on tips from this three-year-old reddit thread reddit.com/r/java/comments/m…)
- Optimized Lucene queries and LSH models to break 200 qps at 96% recall on the Fashion MNIST benchmark github.com/alexklibisz/elast…, github.com/alexklibisz/elast…, github.com/alexklibisz/elast…, github.com/alexklibisz/elast…, (partially based on this post from @mikemccand xitter.cf/mikemccand/status/1720…)
Oh the crazy things you must do if you want to use the fast SIMD instructions in modern CPUs from Java's multiple iterations of the incubating Panama Vector API (JEPs 438, 426, ...).
Is a fused-multiple-add (FMA) better than separating the two?
Should you use the vector implementation, or your own (pure java) scalar version for Hotspot to compile?
And also the little details you learn about each CPU across vendors and generations, such as the subtle differences between AMD's and Intel's AVX-512 implementation.
