On 7 October 1950, in the small village of Msoga, in Tanzania's Bagamoyo district, a boy was born who would one day carry the hopes of a nation. He grew up close to the soil and close to his people. He studied economics at the University of Dar es Salaam, served his country in uniform, and later spent a decade as Tanzania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, carrying the nation's voice to the world. In 2005, Tanzanians entrusted him with the presidency. For ten years he led with an open door and an open heart, and in 2008 he chaired the African Union, speaking not only for Tanzania but for the whole continent. And when his time in office ended, he did something rare. He handed over power peacefully, and kept serving. Through education, health and peace-building, his work for Africa simply changed address. At the African Leadership Organization, we are privileged to have him as Chairman of our Advisory Board. His wisdom guides us, his humility challenges us, and his life reminds us that the greatest leaders never stop giving. Happy birthday, H.E. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. Thank you for a life lived in service. May your years ahead be long, healthy and full of joy. #HappyBirthdayKikwete #AfricanLeadership #ALO #Tanzania #ServantLeadership

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia addressed the International Forum on African-Caribbean Leadership in New York, on the margins of the 77th United Nations General Assembly. Africa and the Caribbean share a history. They do not yet share an economy. Cargo between the two regions still routes through European ports. Direct flights are scarce. Payments clear through third-party banks in third-party currencies. Two regions bound by ancestry, trading through everybody else's infrastructure. What happens when African businesses stop waiting for opportunities to come to them and start creating the connections themselves? That was the spirit of the Nigeria–Lesotho B2B Business Meeting, convened by the African Leadership Organisation (ALO) in partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). Bringing together Prime Minister Sam Matekane, Lesotho’s investment and tourism institutions, Nigerian business leaders and private sector operators, the meeting created a practical space to explore what stronger Nigeria–Lesotho economic ties could look like. The message from Lesotho was clear: the country is open to Nigerian businesses. Investors were presented with opportunities across manufacturing, construction, tourism, renewable energy and digital technology, alongside incentives including 100% repatriation of capital, a tax system designed to prevent double taxation, competitive electricity tariffs and access to wider Southern African markets through Lesotho’s SADC membership. But beyond the incentives, the bigger conversation was about people. About Nigerian entrepreneurs finding new markets. About Lesotho businesses finding new partners. About governments creating the conditions for enterprise to thrive. And about African businesses building the relationships that can turn the promise of AfCFTA into something tangible. As Prime Minister Matekane put it, the goal was to establish new relationships, deepen existing partnerships and position Lesotho as a destination for investment, innovation and enterprise. That is why ALO convened this room: not simply to host another business conversation, but to bring people together, create connections and help move those conversations towards partnerships. The forum ended where meaningful business relationships often begin: face-to-face B2B engagements between Nigerian and Lesotho companies. Africa’s next trade corridor will not be built by policy alone. It will be built by entrepreneurs who meet, collaborate, invest and create together. Coverage: Arise News

At the Breaking Barriers to Trade & Leadership Summit at Lancaster Accra, Panel Two zeroed in on a critical reality: Advancing Women-Led Trade and Enterprise in Ghana. The discussion tackled the structural barriers holding women entrepreneurs back—moving past the conversation on ambition to directly address the systemic gaps in formal credit, trade documentation, and chamber memberships that prevent women-led businesses from scaling across borders. It was a clear call to action for those who currently hold access to actively open doors and redesign these systems. Panelists & Moderator include Miss Esther Kyeraa (Moderator) Baroness Verma (House of Lords, UK) Mr. Alex Agyei-Amponsah Mr. Bismark Sarkodie-Addo Miss Sarah Fafa Kpodo Connecting Markets. Narrative, systems, and legacy are often treated as separate issues. In reality, they are simply the same challenge viewed from three different perspectives: A narrative shapes what a market believes is possible. A system dictates what it can actually deliver. A legacy is what remains long after the builders have moved on. At the Breaking Barriers to Trade & Leadership Summit, Panel One tackled all three head-on under the theme Shifting Narratives, Redesigning Systems, Building the Future. On the panel: Mr Prince Odeneho Oppong Dr Legborsi Nwiabu Mr Saqib Nazir Mr Yaw Ofosu-Nantwi 📍 Lancaster Accra Connecting Markets. Creating Opportunities. Trade between African markets isn’t held back by a lack of agreements. The treaties are signed and the frameworks are already in place. What actually matters and what proves far harder, is what happens on the ground. Can a business reliably move goods, price risk, and get paid? At the Breaking Barriers to Trade Summit at Lancaster Accra, Baroness Verma, the cohost of BBTLS delivered a keynote address laying out exactly what those real-world conditions require, and who needs to step up to build them. The summit brings together operators, investors, and leaders to tackle these core challenges head-on. Connecting Markets. Creating Opportunities. Transforming Futures.

The conversation began in Abuja on 30th of July. On 4th of August, it landed in Accra. Trade across African markets doesn’t happen in isolation. It gets built in the space between our cities by leaders willing to pack a bag, cross borders, and ask the tough questions to a new room. At the Breaking Barriers to Trade & Leadership Summit in Lancaster Accra, Dr. Ken Giami, Founder & Group CEO of the African Leadership Organisation, delivered an inspiring opening keynote on what it truly takes to dismantle trade obstacles across the continent. The African Leadership Council recognises Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, National President of the customs Officers' Wives Association of Nigeria, with the Green Border & Sustainability Excellence Award. Under her leadership, COWA has taken environmental stewardship into a place it is rarely found — the border communities where Nigeria's frontline officers and their families live and work. The Green Borders initiative has treated those communities not as a backdrop for national policy, but as the site where sustainability is actually practised. This award recognises sustained work, delivered at scale, in places where it was not obvious it would be delivered at all. Congratulations, Mrs. Adeniyi.

Dr. @GEJonathan , GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with an Award for Democratic Leadership & Institutional Integrity at the Breaking Barriers to Trade & Leadership Summit. Today, he remains a respected advocate for peace, democratic governance and good governance, advancing stability across the continent through mediation, election observation and public service. His leadership has become a lasting symbol of statesmanship, reinforcing the belief that true leadership is measured not only by the office one holds, but by the values one upholds. Bakare underscored the need for Africa to redefine its role in global affairs. He stated that, "Foreign affairs in the 21st century demand that Africa stop reacting to global events and start actively participating in designing them." He emphasised that by strengthening these foundations, Africa can shape international discourse, advance its strategic interests, and secure a more prominent role in the global political and economic order.

Institutions are the only technology a country cannot import. They must be built where they will be used. H.E. Samuel Matekane, Prime Minister of Lesotho, delivered the keynote address at the Breaking Barriers to Trade and Leadership Summit — "Re-Imagining Governance: What Africa's Institutions Must Become." The premise was direct. Africa does not lack frameworks, protocols or signed agreements. What determines whether AfCFTA becomes a trading reality or a filing cabinet is institutional capacity: customs authorities that clear goods, courts that enforce contracts, agencies that outlast the administrations which created them. A Prime Minister who came to office from the private sector brings a particular clarity to that argument — the difference between an institution that announces and an institution that delivers is measured by anyone trying to move a container across a border. The reimagining is not rhetorical. It is operational. 📍 Breaking Barriers to Trade and Leadership Summit #BreakingBarriersSummit #BBTLS #Lesotho #AfricanGovernance #AfCFTA #InstitutionalReform #AfricanLeadershipMagazine #IntraAfricanTrade

Speaking at the African Leadership Organisation (ALO) Breaking Barriers to Trade and Leadership Summit held in Abuja on 30 July 2026, Mr Taiwo Oyedele Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Federal Republic of Nigeria, emphasised that the most significant obstacles to leadership and trade are not physical but systemic. According to him, "The greatest barriers to leadership and trade are rarely physical. They are mostly institutional. They are policy induced, they are regulatory, and sometimes they are psychological." He stressed that dismantling these institutional and policy barriers is essential to unlocking Africa's economic potential, improving competitiveness, and creating an enabling environment for sustainable trade, investment, and continental development.

An enabling environment is not a slogan. It is the sum of what a trader can rely on: a rule that holds, an office that answers, a contract that means something when tested. H.E. Dr @JewelHTaylorOff , former Vice President of Liberia, on "Re-Imagining Enabling Environment for Trade, Influence & Institutional Legacy in Nigeria." Institutions outlast the people who build them. That is the point of building them well. 📍 Breaking Barriers to Trade and Leadership Summit, Abuja #BreakingBarriersSummit #BBTLS #AfCFTA #Liberia
