Kenya's heroes' day began as a day of fasting. The date is 20 October 1952, when Jomo Kenyatta was arrested. In 1958 the Nairobi People's Convention Party, led by Tom Mboya, agreed to mark the anniversary with a fast, and the first observance in 1959 ran on bus boycotts. At independence in 1963 it was gazetted as Kenyatta Day. In 2010, Kenyans voted in a new constitution, and Kenyatta Day became Mashujaa Day for all the heroes and heroines of the struggle. A country that had named the day after one man renamed it after everyone who had been in it. Happy Mashujaa Day, Kenya. 15 October belongs to two men who now live mostly on posters. Their records are more specific than the slogans. Thomas Sankara, killed on this day in 1987 at 37, renamed Upper Volta "Burkina Faso" — land of the upright people. Under him about two million people were vaccinated, ten million trees were planted in fifteen months, and ministers swapped their Mercedes for the Renault 5. Fela Anikulapo Kuti, born on this day in 1938, built Afrobeat, declared his Lagos compound an independent republic, and released Zombie — a song that cost him his home. If someone listed only what you did, what would the list say? Read Issue 200 here: publuu.com/flip-book/853466/… #AfricanLeadershipMagazine #ThomasSankara #FelaKuti #Afrobeat #LeadershipLegacy
