Open sourcing my regression lectures 🍻
AI is changing how we teach. Here’s one way I’m adapting: I’ve open-sourced my regression course, POLI 450A, built on Jens Hainmueller’s original class.
The course is suitable for first-year political science PhDs, as well as advanced undergraduate students in economics, political science, and other social sciences.
The materials include slides, R code, data, worksheets, and a short video for every lecture.

Happy to announce the release of our first curated dataset from @GLL_Brown @Brown_Economics @Watson_School @RhodesCenter We logged every US tariff rate: threats, announcements, signed into law since January 2025. 749 of them, timed to the minute, with the exact quote and source. Only 30% are executive orders. The rest is the noise markets trade on. Free, updated weekly:

Hello to our friends in China who use Omarchy and Arch, greetings from Mexico! 🇲🇽
It took a lot of work, but Strata, our file manager, now supports Simplified Chinese! 🎉 Nobody on our team speaks the language, so please forgive any mistakes. If you give it a try, let us know about any issues you find. We want to fix everything and make Strata great for everyone!

Political scientists and economists: we're looking for researchers with deep expertise to come work with us for a unique 4-month fellowship at @AnthropicAI. You'll work closely with us to evaluate, improve, and apply Claude's capabilities in your field. It's going to be extremely fun and interesting work, and definitely worth taking a short leave from your university for if you need to!

In the 1990s, Angus Deaton noted that the CPI we use to deflate tend to be based on weights for people in the top quartile of the population income-wise. When you shift to weights that represent poor people's expenditure patterns, you find different rates of inflation.
For the end of the 1860s to the 1910s, this was not trivial. The poor had more deflation (yes) than the "usual CPI" (and far more than the rich). Thus, just for these reasons, we understate their gains. Below I show the hourly wages of production workers deflated by either the CPI or a poor-people price index. You miss a great deal of gains.
Over that period, it means that the real gains at 2.5% per annum compared to 2.11% per annum. A 0.4 pp difference which is huge. So the faster-growing series cuts the time needed for wages to double by roughly 5 years (28 years instead of 33 years)

Teaching R and stats to complete beginners using Data Analysis for Social Science (DSS)?
Just revised my syllabus — find it here: ellaudet.github.io/dss_instr…
New and improved self-graded review exercises coming soon — stay tuned! #rstats
My textbook with Kosuke Imai (@Harvard) is finally out!
Assuming no prior knowledge of statistics or coding and only minimal knowledge of math, DSS teaches the fundamentals of survey research, predictive models, and causal inference + how to analyze real-world data with R.
